Wild Rift Horizon Cup Group B preview and schedule

There is only one day remaining until Wild Rift’s Horizon Cup gets underway, and we are taking a closer look at Group B going into the event.

League of Legends: Wild Rift has come a long way in the year that it has been out, seeing tournaments showing up in multiple regions across the globe. One of these is the upcoming Horizon Cup, which will see teams from across the globe fighting against one another, in what could almost be seen as the “Worlds of Wild Rift”. Being the first event of its type, Horizon Cup is set to be massive for the game, while also being the first Wild Rift tournament to use the Ban-Pick mode for the game. With that in mind, we look towards Group B, which features five of the ten teams in the event.

Group B

eBRO Gaming
Sengoku Gaming
Team Queso
Team Secret
ThunderTalk Gaming

For those familiar with esports in general, there is one name in this group that definitely stands out about the rest, although albeit in a different game altogether. Team Secret is definitely the biggest name in Group B, but whether or not the team will be able to fight against some of their opponents remains to be seen.

For many teams that are coming into the Wild Rift Horizon Cup, this will technically be the very first time we get to watch them play. One of these teams is the South Americans of eBRO Gaming – a mainly Argentinian roster, with players from Uruguay and Chile too. This team, formed in late June, have not really made a massive impact on their region, placing third and fourth often in their earlier tournaments. However, when it came down to the Lolcito Salvaje Abierto 2021 Finals, eBRO suddenly found new life, taking down all in their path, winning their first event and securing passage to the Horizon Cup.

That said, eBRO are one of many so-called, “dark horse” teams in the event, especially featuring in Group B, and could surprise us all. As far as South American teams go in many other esports, there’s always a chance that their nation pride guides them through any opposition.

At the recent Worlds 2021, we saw a team from LJL manage to push through into the group stages of the event with DetonatioN FocusMe making a valiant effort to make a name for Japan. Looking at Wild Rift, we see another Japanese team making massive strides in the game, although a massive break could have hindered their progress.

Formed in early February, Sengoku quickly took control of the Japanese region, but from May through to August, the team were missing in action. That said, the team came back to take the Japan Cup 2021, which is what got them to the Horizon Cup. With that in mind, there is not much information on the team since their win, which could see them either struggle or cause massive problems for their opponents.

Much of Group B is teams that we have not seen a lot of Wild Rift action from through the year, with Team Queso being one of these. Entering the WR scene in March, the Spanish squad have been able to take complete control of the European region, ahead of teams such as Unicorns of Love and Natus Vincere. Prior to their recent wins, Queso were constantly at the mercy of another roster named “No Team No Talent”, who ended up becoming Rix.GG.

But, when they entered the Wild Rift Origin Series: Championship, Queso seemed to have finally found their stride, taking them down and booking their spot at the Horizon Cup. Queso now look to hopefully find their way through Group B in the same way, hopefully figuring out their opponents faster than they did before.

Possibly the most recognisable team in Group B is Team Secret, if not for their name, but for the team’s brilliance in Southeast Asia’s Wild Rift scene. After announcing their first player back in December of last year, February would be when Secret’s roster completely filled up, and they were quick to stamp their mark on the Wild Rift scene. From third to first, Secret were a dominant factor in the SEA scene, that was until the recent SEA Championship 2021, where SBTC Esports were too strong for them to deal with.

That said, Secret is possibly the strongest team in Group B, with the most experience behind them too, which could mean that we see the two SEA representatives top their groups, if things go their way. However, with Wild Rift still being new, there’s always room for an upset, and Secret could find themselves falling behind.

Last, but certainly not least, is ThunderTalk Gaming, China’s second representative at the Horizon Cup, the first being that of Da Kun Gaming. This team is probably the newest signed squad that has made it to the event, with many of their players leaving in September, with new players picked up. The new roster was able to secure a magnificent win at the Wild Rift League 2022: LPL Qualifier, taking down teams like Royal Never Give Up, Edward Gaming, Invictus Gaming and Oh My God.

However, with that in mind, the team have had some issues in their Horizon Cup roster before the tournament has even begun – as Visa issues for three players means that they required three replacements. This could be a problem for the team as they look to become champions of Wild Rift’s Horizon Cup.

Group B schedule

The group stage of the Horizon Cup, being split into two separate groups, will see a total of five days of action. Over these days, each team in each group will play a total of one best-of-three series against every other team in the same group. At the end of the group stages, the top three teams in each group will advance into the playoffs, while the bottom two teams will be eliminated. The team at the top of each group will also receive a one-round bye, progressing directly into their respective semi-finals.

Although Group B may be seen as the group of underdogs, this gives these teams even more to play for. With how new Wild Rift still is, plus the addition of Ban-Pick mode, Horizon Cup is certainly going to be an event that shows new talents emerging and new picks coming up too. We are all excited to see just what happens when the Horizon Cup kicks off on Saturday, November 13th, 2021.
