Hello gentle readers, and welcome to another very big edition of the SwitchArcade Round-Up. As is typically the case on Fridays, there are a lot of new sales to check out. There’s also an abnormally large number of new releases, and we’ve got summaries for each one of them. For whatever reason, I also decided to pack a few news stories in here, too. Well, don’t say I didn’t give you anything good to read while you take care of business. Let’s go!
News
‘LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’ Delayed to Early 2021
Originally intended for release later this year, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has been delayed to early 2021. But hey, it’s not all bad. We did get a trailer showing us some gameplay from the upcoming release, which aims to cover all nine episodes of the Skywalker Saga of Star Wars. It… it sure looks like a LEGO Star Wars game, doesn’t it? Glad we got that video so we know what to expect. Anyway, soak up that trailer and make a mental note of the new release window. We’ll be bashing bricks with lightsabers again soon enough.
‘Turrican’ Comes Back in ‘Turrican Anthology’ Sets
Factor 5 has been out of the spotlight long enough that its name may not be well-known among all gamers, but let me tell you something: that developer knew how to make some awesome action games. Perhaps the greatest emblem of that is its homegrown Turrican series, a bunch of white-knuckle run-and-gun games that graced a variety of platforms. Well, Switch owners will have a chance to relive those days with the new Turrican Anthology sets. ININ Games, Factor 5, and Strictly Limited Games are teaming up to bring two volumes, each with five Turrican games. Volume 1 has Turrican (Amiga), Turrican 2 (Amiga), Super Turrican (Super NES), Super Turrican Director’s Cut (Super NES), and Mega Turrican Score Attack (Genesis).
In Volume 2, you’ll find Turrican 3 (Amiga), Mega Turrican (Genesis), Mega Turrican Director’s Cut (Genesis), Super Turrican 2 (Super NES), and Super Turrican 1 Score Attack (Super NES). What, no Universal Soldier? The sets will be available digitally and physically, and two special physical editions will be available through Strictly Limited Games. The Collector’s Edition includes both volumes and a number of extras like a poster, a keychain, and a soundtrack selection CD. The Ultra Collector’s Edition has everything from the other set plus an Amiga-style big box, a diorama, a 4-CD soundtrack, a Turrican figure, and more.
‘Space Invaders Forever’ Brings a Trio of Games Together
Strictly Limited Games offered up Space Invaders Invincible Collection as a physical release earlier this year, but for those of you who are less interested in history and more interested in playing the newer entries in the Space Invaders series, Space Invaders Forever from ININ Games may be a more reasonable choice. Coming later this year in both physical and digital forms, Space Invaders Forever contains Space Invaders Extreme, Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE, and Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders. These games are included in Space Invaders Invincible Collection alongside several other older titles, but I’m assuming this release will come in at a slightly more reasonable price.

Gemini Arms ($9.49)

Terarin Games isn’t a famous name, but it’s a little developer from Japan that cranks out excellent shoot-em-ups, largely on home computers. A couple of its games have been ported to Switch in Japan, and they’re finally being released in the West. The first of the bunch is Gemini Arms, a clever side-scrolling game featuring transforming robots who can join together for extra fire power. Two players can join the fight at once via local multiplayer, but you can also play solo if you like. If you like shooters, you’ll want to add this one to your collection.
Witcheye ($4.99)

Some readers may remember Witcheye from its mobile release, and this Switch version offers much the same experience. You play as a witch who transforms into a flying eyeball who has to make her way through more than fifty stages of action and light exploration. The game was originally designed around touch controls and it indeed plays best that way, but there are button controls available for those who want to enjoy the adventure on the big screen. It’s a pleasant romp with lots of extra modes and some unlockables to keep you coming back. The price is also quite nice.
Death’s Hangover ($4.99)

This is a spin on the old Breakout/Arkanoid concept where you have to bat a ball at blocks to remove them from the field. Well, in this game it’s often enemies that you’re trying to hit, but you get the idea. It’s quite well done, and the whole thing is wrapped up in a goofy story that lets the nearly one hundred stages play around with a fun theme. There are power-ups, boss fights, and all that good stuff. You can also play co-op with a friend via local multiplayer. I’m a sucker for games like this, and this is a solid one at a great price.
#NoLimitFantasy, Super Puzzles Dream ($6.19)
You know, it kind of irritates me when developers put hashtags in their game titles. It really irritates me when there doesn’t seem to be any reason for it, and as I’ve come to learn, I find it incredibly aggravating when a game includes an entire unrelated clause with a hashtag. Anyway, this is the next game in the Super Puzzles Dream series. The broad idea here is that you are completing jigsaw puzzles, but the pieces fall in like Tetris blocks. There are 25 puzzles to complete, and when you finish each of them you are treated to a cloying motivational message. There are seven difficulty levels that determine how many pieces each puzzle has, and two levels of play. A local head-to-head two-player mode has also been included.
Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars ($39.99)
This is a card-based strategy game with some mighty impressive visuals working for it. There are 12 missions for you tackle with one of four different vampire lords. You’ll have to make the most of your vampiric powers and monstrous minions to defeat your enemies. Beyond the campaign, you can also play around with a skirmish mode and sandbox mode. This one is single-player only, unfortunately. But the core gameplay is solid and there’s a fair bit of content here to chew on. I’d say if you like the genre and are interested in the gothic setting, give it a shot. Otherwise, it’s a bit on the expensive side for what it is.
Solitaire Klondike Minimal ($2.99)
Well, every word of that title checks out. This is indeed a very minimalistic take on Klondike Solitaire. There are three different difficulty levels and you can choose between one-draw or three-draw rules. You can save mid-game and it keeps track of your stats, and that’s about it. Just some good ol’ solitaire. I think there are far better packages for playing Klondike on your Switch, but not many of them are this cheap. Not much else I can say here, so… um… keep on truckin’?
Windbound ($29.99)
I had high hopes for this one based on the description and screenshots, but I’ve been able to spend some time with it before release and I found that the more I played it the less I liked it. You’re basically wandering from island to island, trying to scrape together what you need to survive and moving on. Early on, it’s pretty interesting. But you find yourself repeating almost the same process with each island, and that’s not even touching on the sometimes long voyages between them. The biggest problem comes in the roguelite elements, which often see you struggling to find the things you need to survive depending on the whims of the random number generator. I’ll have a review of this one later, but aside from its gorgeous art style and strong start, I’m not a huge fan.
Color Jumper ($9.99)
This is a pretty straightforward platformer with a twist to help it stand out. That twist is that the character you control is a square with a different color on each of its four sides. Every time you jump, the colors will rotate 90 degrees. The trick is that many of the stage elements require you to match up the right color with objects in order to interact with them. Easy enough when you have time and space to move around in, but a lot more difficult in tense situations. This is a tough one, especially if you’re trying to speed through the stages. With more than 100 levels to play, you’ll be playing for quite a while before reaching the end. It’s alright.
Jump Force Deluxe Edition ($59.99)
When it comes to weekly manga magazines, it doesn’t get much bigger than Shounen Jump. Dragon Ball, One Piece, My Hero Academia, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Bleach, Naruto, Fist of the North Star, Yu-Gi-Oh, Hunter x Hunter… it’s a regular all-star list of popular action manga. So why not have a nice fighting game starring a bunch of the biggest characters from all of those series? This version of the game includes nine extra characters from the first Character Pass plus their costumes and moves for use with your avatar. Up to six players can get in on the action, and it thankfully features online play. But is it any good? Wow, so many great characters! Let’s move on!
Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions ($59.99)
Captain Tsubasa may not be a name that rings many bells in North America, but in some countries it was an absolute phenomenon back in the day. An over-the-top, highly dramatic anime about soccer, Captain Tsubasa also had a very successful game or two in the NES era. It’s been about a decade since he last laced up for a console game, but Captain Tsubasa and his wild brand of soccer action are back. True to the brand, this is a powered-up take on soccer and as such probably isn’t the best choice for people looking for a sim. If you’re a fan of the anime, however, you’ll likely thrill along to the roller coaster ride.
Nexomon: Extinction ($19.99)
Need something to keep you busy while you wait for the next part of the Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass? Perhaps Nexomon: Extinction will fit the bill. Mobile gamers should remember this series, which debuted on mobile a few years ago. Possibly several years ago. I don’t keep track of time anymore. It’s a bit spruced up for this Switch release, but it remains a fairly well-done throwback to the 2D days of Pokemon. There are more than 300 Nexomon to capture and train, and a whole world to explore. No multiplayer, but there’s a fair bit of content here to chew on. Is it as good as Pokemon? Heavens, no. But it’s decent enough to satisfy the urge for a while.
Grim Legends: The Forsaken Blade ($14.99)
It’s been a little bit since the last Artifex Mundi release on the Switch, so I’m sure the many fans of the company’s particular flavor of hidden object adventure will be glad to see Grim Legends: The Forsaken Blade. A lonely, highly-superstitious village is surrounded by a spooky forest said to contain all manner of evil spirits. A young women returns home to attend her twin sister’s wedding, but something feels amiss. A stranger arrived in town not that long ago, and things have been a little off ever since. Can you solve the mystery and come out alive? By now, most should know what to expect from this kind of thing. You don’t really need me to tell you whether or not to buy it.
Road to Guangdong ($24.99)
Lots of interesting stories about Chinese culture popping up on the eShop recently. Road to Guangdong is a driving game with a strong coming-of-age narrative written by Yen Ooi. Set in 1990s China, it follows the story of a woman named Sunny who is at a crucial juncture of her life. She’s taken over her family’s restaurant, but it’s in rough shape. With the help of her aunt Guu Ma, she has to try to revive the restaurant by visiting distant family members to learn about secrets to help pull in more customers. Those travels happen via a family car that has also seen better days, and you’ll need to be careful if you want to keep it running. The relationship with Sunny’s aunt will see some wear and tear as the kilometers pile up. This game has a lot of heart, but the gameplay largely boils down to trying to keep a near-dead car and prickly older relative happy as you drive long distances. Definitely not for everyone.
A Hero and a Garden ($4.99)
A visual novel idle game? Sure, why not? We’ve got all kinds of games these days, after all. This game tells the tale of a hero who tried to save a princess from an evil witch by storming a tower, only to find himself on the hook for repairing all the damage he caused to the monsters’ village. To pay it back, he’ll have to grow and tend a garden. So yeah, do that idle thing where you amass resources to buy upgrades and so on. But also, do that visual novel thing where you watch story scenes and make choices. There are multiple endings based on how you play. Seems cute, and the price is certainly right.
The Last Campfire ($14.99)
From Hello Games (No Man’s Sky) and some of the minds behind the wonderful LostWinds comes this short adventure about protecting hope from the darkness. You need to help a lost ember find its place in the world and get home. You’ll travel through mysterious and beautiful locations on your way to light the Last Campfire, after which you will presumably enjoy the Last Roasted Marshmallows. This game is also available on Apple Arcade as of today and honestly I think you’re better off playing it there if you can. It’s a bit on the short side and there aren’t a ton of reasons to replay it beyond experiencing the story again. The Switch version is fine if you want to play the game and it’s your only option, however.

Yesterday we talked about Retro Classix 2-in-1 Pack: Bad Dudes & Two Crude Dudes, but a few more of these repackaged Johnny Turbo’s Arcade packs popped up alongside it. These all offer a bit of savings over buying the individual games, but watch out for overlapping titles. These versions of the games haven’t exactly had a lot of tender loving care put into them, but they’re adequate enough to get the point across. As for the games themselves? They run the gamut in quality, but if you don’t have nostalgia for them I’m not sure how well a person would like any of them. They’re all Data East games, and that company had a very odd design sense that appeals to some and turns off others.

So yeah, lots of games on sale. Nothing weird about that. The biggest highlight in my books is the selection of Annapurna games on sale. Plenty of great games in there, and they rarely see discounts like these. Beyond that, it’s a lot of the usual suspects. If you pick through you’ll find rarities like Football Manager 2020 Touch, Rock of Ages 3, and Radical Rabbit Stew, but for the most part we’ve seen these games on sale before and they’ll be back again before too long. The weekend outbox tells a similar story, so spend or save as you like.

Hopefully we’ll get some news from Nintendo soon as to what we can look forward to for the holidays from them beyond Pikmin 3. Will the heavily-rumored Mario Anniversary remakes become a reality, or are they just a cruel joke? Is Nintendo going to add a new console to the Switch Online retro game service?
