Studio Acquisitions Are “a Natural and Healthy Part of Our Industry” – Phil Spencer

Acquisitions of developers (and at times even publishers) have been part of the games industry for a long time, as is the case in any other industry of course, but the last few years in particular have seen a flurry of activity on that front. Sony recently confirmed the purchase of Housemarque (and may have leaked an imminent Bluepoint Games acquisition), EA has acquired Codemasters, Embracer Group’s spending spree is refusing to end, and of course, Microsoft has picked up a large number of companies as well, most notably with

Dream Games raises $155M at a $1B valuation as its Royal Match puzzle game hits a royal flush

Istanbul in Turkey continues to prove itself as very fertile ground for casual gaming startups, which appear to be growing from small seedlings into sizable trees. In the latest development, Dream Games — a developer of mobile puzzle games — has raised $155 million in funding, a Series B that values the startup at $1 billion. This is a massive leap for the company, which raised $50 million (the largest Series A in Turkey’s startup history) only 3.5 months ago. This latest round is being co-led by Index Ventures and

Sony acquires Returnal studio Housemarque, potential Bluepoint Studios acquisition leaked

Sony Interactive Entertainment has added another studio to the PlayStation family, announcing the acquisition of Returnal developer Housemarque earlier today. No specifics about the deal itself were shared, but Housemarque is now a first-party Sony team within SIE Worldwide Studios after being independent since its initial founding in 1996.  Despite being independent, Housemarque has worked closely with Sony since the release of Super Stardust HD, an enhanced version of one of the company’s earliest shoot ’em ups, which was published by Sony on the PlayStation 3. In 2017, the company

Games’ mobile gaming studio Playdemic for $1.4 billion in an all-cash deal. The Manchester studio is best known for its release “Golf Clash” which the studio boasts has more than 80 million downloads globally. The rather ominously-named startup is

Halo Infinite Will Not Have Loot Boxes

[embedded content] When it comes to Microsoft, one of their biggest exclusives that they owned before all the acquisitions they have recently acquired was Halo. This series first got started with Bungie and while the original development studio has gone on to work on their next big IP, Destiny, Halo was given control to 343 Industries. We’re all waiting for Halo Infinite and fortunately, we got some news regarding the game during this year’s E3 2021 streams. Microsoft had featured Halo Infinite during their media stream conference which highlighted the

Facebook buys game studio BigBox VR

Facebook has bought several virtual reality game studios over the past couple of years, and they added one more to their portfolio Friday with the acquisition of Seattle-based BigBox VR. The studio’s major title, “Population: One,” was one of the big post-launch releases for Facebook’s Oculus Quest 2 headset and is a pretty direct Fortnite clone, copying a number of key gameplay techniques while adapting them for the movements unique to virtual reality and bringing in their own lore and art style.
