Riot Games has consolidated operations of its European esports leagues under its Berlin-based esports team, which currently oversees the League of Legends European Championship as well as EU Masters. The team’s responsibilities will now expand to include the Turkish Championship League, League of Legends Continental League, all European Regional Leagues, and esports initiatives in the Middle East. The team will be led by Director of European Esports Alberto Guerrero, who joined Riot in 2017 and became Europe head of esports in 2019. Hans Christian Dürr (formerly head of esports for

North is going south: how to chart a different course

The North project is one of the more interesting in recent CS:GO history. For those who don’t know, the Danish team was originally formed and funded using VC from a number of European sources, with the majority of the funding provided by FC Copenhagen, one of the top teams in the Danish Superliga, and traditionally one of Denmark’s best football sides. This created a lot of headlines and excitement about the prospect of two world-class teams in the country, and fans latched on the angle of ‘professional sports team invests into

Serral wins DreamHack Masters Summer Finals

TL.net ESPORTS Profile Joined July 2011 1 Post Held in the midst of a global pandemic, Dreamhack Masters Summer had to be an abnormal tournament. Amid these unusual circumstances, StarCraft II fans would found the conclusion of the tournament, at least, to be quite familiar: Serral emerged triumphant over a

What’s next for disco doplan?

“It all started with most of us playing a lot of FACEIT together. Mostly draken, mOkEn, freddieb and me," disco doplan says of time before signing with CG. "draken, mOkEn and REZ played the first European Minor at the time with zehN and rezex, but then freddieb and I basically said we should make a Swedish team instead, which we did a week or two after the Minor ended.” Appearing seemingly out of thin air, that team of young Swedish players went on to make a name for themselves in

Hunting Simulator 2 review: Doggone it

Hunting Simulator 2 arrives a few years after a lackluster showing from the first game in the series. This new addition to the franchise aims higher with updated graphics, an array of licensed gears, and canine companions. In the end, the four-legged friendships you develop along the way are worth remembering. Hunting Simulator 2 feels like a step back in a few ways from its predecessor and feels so far behind its competition that it is hard to recommend for hunting fanatics or players looking for a more casual experience.

Where to open a game studio

With the game industry booming, more entrepreneurs are evaluating where to base their new startup or open a new office for their existing company. The U.S. government’s block on H1-B and L-1 visas will encourage American game startups to add an office abroad much sooner than they otherwise would have. But where? This spring, I surveyed a number of gaming-focused VCs about which cities are the best hubs for game studios targeting the Western games market. Several locales stood out as heavily recommended — which I’ve shared below — but
