U.S. Department of Justice opens antitrust inquiry into Overwatch League’s soft salary cap, ‘competitive balance tax’

The U.S. Department of Justice antitrust division is probing the Overwatch League over its soft salary cap policy that discourages teams from excess spending, sources familiar with that inquiry told Dot Esports. The probe is being headed by DOJ trial attorney Kathleen Simpson Kiernan, who works for the Civil Conduct Task Force subdivision of the antitrust division in Washington. Kiernan and other DOJ attorneys have contacted and interviewed several former Overwatch League employees, according to sources. The nature of Kiernan’s investigation is not criminal, sources said. DOJ officials did not

m1cks: “There was a very real sense on Cloud9 where everyone was playing not to lose”

In 2018, Joshua "m1cks" Micks reached out to a number of teams playing in ESEA MDL North America, offering his services as an analyst for free. Only one person responded to his request - Tiaan "T.c" Coertzen from Bravado. The opportunity to be an analyst for the South African team proved to be a breakthrough for m1cks, who went on to occupy assistant coach and analyst roles for Rogue, Spacestation, and eUnited over the following two years, working under the likes of Mathias "MSL" Lauridsen and Johnny "JT" Theodosiou. The result capped a weird night of combat sports and music with a memorable highlight and a touch of controversy.  The bout between Paul and Askren

Hyper-Casual Games: Trends and How to Reach Scale

This article originally appeared on Hackernoon and is reproduced with permission. Hyper-casual games have captured the mobile games industry’s interest ever since the incredible meteoric rise (and fall) of Flappy Bird in 2014. In 2018, the total mobile games market stood at $50 billion, of which $10 billion came from in-game advertising and the rest from in-app purchases. In that same year, AppAnnie reported that hyper-casual games made up 53.4% of the top 30 game installs in the US and over 27% in Japan and Korea, respectively. Fast forward to

Esports Regulations Are Front and Center in Brazil

Since 2017, there has been a movement in Brazil to regulate esports in the country. After public pressure stopped a bill from passing on the federal level in 2019, new legislation with similar language is being pushed forward, and in many cases, being approved, through individual Brazilian state governments. This movement has been surrounded by polemic episodes and conflicting sides, which The Esports Observer discovered in researching this article and will expose as facts that might explain what is happening and what may become of this subject. Leak reveals salaries of Valorant stars nitr0, sinatraa

Olivia Richman • Apr 05, 00:15Even though Valorant is a relatively new esport, some of its top players are still raking in big dough. This explains why big names in Overwatch, Apex Legends, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive don't feel it's too much of a risk to switch over to Valorant in the infancy of its esports scene.  The girlfriend Sentinels' Tyson "TenZ" Ngo's girlfriend, Kyedae Shymko, seemingly leaked the salaries of two of Valorant's biggest names. According to Shym, Sentinels' Jay "sinatraa" Won and 100 Thieves' Nicholas "nitr0" Cannella both

Recapping 100Thieves’ time in CS:GO

Nadeshot’s organizations has confirmed its departure from the Counter-Strike scene after just a little more than a year with their current squad. Despite the promise, they never really lived up the expectations of a “championship-calier roster”, and once you factor in their disastrous first attempt at entering CS:GO, you wouldn’t exactly blame them for staying away from the game for the foreseeable future. It’s not just the performance of the ex-Renegades but the state of NA CS as a whole that may prove to be the real deterrent. The opening gambitThe

MonteCristo: “I can promise that we will have on Flashpoint the best features that have been made during this pandemic”

Flashpoint will return in early November after more than a six-month break, this time with a Europe-based online tournament that will be covered by an on-air team working out of a studio in London. The new-look Cloud9 roster headlines the lineup of partner teams for the league, which will also feature two big-name qualified sides coming from the CIS — Virtus.pro and forZe — and three top-20 invitees — OG, BIG and fnatic. MonteCristo says that Flashpoint 2 will raise the bar, both in terms of the level of competition
