March Investment Recap: More Than $200M of Fresh Capital Gets Injected into the Esports Ecosystem 

During the month of March 2021, The Esports Observer tracked 23 investments raised by esports-relevant companies. Disclosed investments amounted to $233M USD, bringing the total sum of disclosed investments in 2021 to $1.9B.  In addition to several significant investments, including Overwolf’s $50M+ and Envy Gaming’s 40M Series C financing rounds, several private placement deals by Toronto Stock Exchange Venture Exchange listed esports companies, and multiple seed round investments, a couple of major deals in the works came to light during the month. Super League Gaming is in the process of acquiring live streaming technology platform Mobcrush at a transaction value likely to exceed $60M and Microsoft is in talks to acquire gaming

Gearbox Software & Embracer Merge in USD $1.3 Billion Deal

Gearbox Software, the esteemed studio behind the Borderlands franchise, has this week become the latest studio to join forces with Embracer Group, the Swedish publisher whose six other subsidiaries include THQ Nordic and Kock Media. August Investment Recap: Fortnite Billions, BITKRAFTS $165M Venture Fund, and New Capital for Esports Organizations

August was a record month for esports investments. The Esports Observer tracked 16 investments raised by esports-relevant companies during the month. Disclosed investments accumulated to $2.78B USD, which is more than all seven previous months of 2020 combined, bringing the total sum of disclosed investments in 2020 to $4.34B.  The news of esports-relevant investments was headlined by the $1.78B financing round raised by Fornite developer Epic Games and the closing of BITKRAFT’s new venture fund at $165M. Update: Huya and DouYu form Special Committees to Evaluate Tencent’s Merger Proposal

Update: The boards of directors of Huya and DouYu formed special committees to review and evaluate Tencent’s proposed stock-for-stock merger of the two Chinese live-streaming platforms. DouYu’s special committee consists of independent directors Zhaoming Chen, Xi Cao, Xuehai Wang, and Zhi Yan. The committee has retained Morgan Stanley Asia as its financial advisor and Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP as its U.S. legal counsel in connection with its review and evaluation of the proposed business combination. Epic Games Raises a $1.8B Funding at a Post-Money Equity Valuation of $17.3B

Fortnite developer Epic Games announced a $1.78B USD corporate venture round consisting of primary capital and secondary purchases from employee equity holders. The investment puts the company’s post-money equity valuation at $17.3B, up roughly 15% compared to its $15B valuation in 2018 when Epic Games raised a $1.25B round. The funding round includes a $250M strategic investment made by Sony Corporation in July. As a number of former Cards Against Humanity employees have come out with stories of a toxic work culture at the company, current workers have decided to unionize. Square Enix To Announce Multiple Games In Next Few Months

Square Enix will announce multiple games individually throughout July and August in lieu of having a press conference, Gematsu reports. During a shareholder meeting it was asked how the company would announce new video games since it did not have an E3 press conference due to the entire event being canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Square Enix responded that it would be announcing games (plural) "individually as the timing permits."The company followed up saying that several will debut around July to August, but nothing more specific was said.
