LoL: VCS Region Misses Out On MSI Over COVID-19 Travel Concerns

The 2021 Mid-Season Invitational has had its first casualty at the hands of COVID-19 as Vietnam (VCS) has had to pull out. After exploring numerous solutions to the situation, Riot Games has today confirmed that the VCS region won’t attend MSI in Iceland. Riot Games has chosen not to replace the region’s spot in Group A, which will see the group play out as normal with one fewer team. GAM Esports having won the 2021 VCS Spring Split would have been the team attending MSI. The team was last represented

LoL: Zeros Banned For Inappropriate Comments

Zeros has been banned from play by the Vietnam Championship Series in light of his unfavorable comments. The organizers of the Vietnam Championship Series (VCS) have banned three-time LoL national champion, Phạm "Zeros" Minh Lộc, for disparaging comments made during a livestream. "I hope the pandemic would get worse so Vietnam could not attend the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) tournament." This was the comment that started an avalanche resulting in Zeros being banned from active competition in esports in Vietnam. If Zeros wants to continue pursuing his professional career, his only

Former GAM Esports Top Laner Zeros Banned From VCS for Making COVID-19 Joke on Stream

by Petar Vukobrat in League of Legends | Apr, 7th 2021 Former GAM Esports top laner Phạm “Zeros” Minh Lộc has just been banned by the VCS (Vietnam Championship Series) for making a COVID-19-related joke on a recent personal stream. Now, making jokes about a disease that has taken so many lives across the globe isn’t something anyone should be doing, let alone if they’re a “high-profile” figure with thousands of people watching.  According to a Saigon Buffalo translation (formerly known as Phong Vũ Buffalo) social media exec, Zeros joked about hopes

Rec Room raises at $1.25B valuation from Sequoia and Index as VCs push to find another Roblox

Investor FOMO following Roblox’s blockbuster public debut is pushing venture capitalists who missed out on that gaming giant to invest in competing platforms. Today, Rec Room announced it has raised $100 million from Sequoia and Index, with participation from Madrona Venture Group. The deal is a huge influx of capital for Rec Room, which had raised less than $50 million before this round, including a $20 million Series C that closed in December. In 2019, we reported that the company had raised its Series B at a $126 million valuation,

Extra Crunch roundup: Coupang and Roblox debut, driving GPT-3 adoption, startup how-tos, more

Extra Crunch publishes a variety of article types, but how-tos are my favorite category. For many entrepreneurs, the startup they are trying to get off the ground might be only the second entry on their resume. As a result, they don’t have much experience to draw from when it comes to basics like hiring, fundraising and growth marketing. Last week, Natasha Mascarenhas interviewed experts who had some strategic advice for finding the right time to bring a product manager on board. This afternoon, we published a guest post by growth

Where to open a game studio

With the game industry booming, more entrepreneurs are evaluating where to base their new startup or open a new office for their existing company. The U.S. government’s block on H1-B and L-1 visas will encourage American game startups to add an office abroad much sooner than they otherwise would have. But where? This spring, I surveyed a number of gaming-focused VCs about which cities are the best hubs for game studios targeting the Western games market. Several locales stood out as heavily recommended — which I’ve shared below — but

Season 5 of Ubisoft Entrepreneur Labs has begun, revealing 8 chosen startups

Based in Station F (Paris), Ubisoft launched the newest season of their startup program, led by the Ubisoft Strategic Innovation Lab. The program is oriented around supporting innovative startup products and services by providing them expert assistance and access to world-class facilities.  Season 5 of this series will be focused over social entertainment, as evidenced by statements made by the Program Director of the Ubisoft Entrepreneurs Lab Catherine Seys’ on the 9th of January, 2020. She laid out the foundation for the 5th Season by saying – “We want to

VCs see opportunities for gaming infrastructure startups and incumbents

As the infrastructure for developing games becomes more advanced, studios have turned to buying best-in-class technology from others instead of building everything from scratch (often with inferior quality). This shift underpinned Unity’s rise as the most popular game engine. The current focus on games as ever-evolving social hubs that can remain popular for a decade requires investment in “live ops” to keep updating the game with new features and experiences, only adding to a game studio’s responsibilities. There are big movements in gaming right now to make games cross-platform (not
