(Image: Times of Malta)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yorgen Fenech is accused of ordering Caruana Galizia\u2019s 2017 assassination by car bomb, an event that made headlines around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Fenech\u2019s alleged involvement in the killing exposed corruption among Malta\u2019s political and business elites, toppling the government of former prime minister Joseph Muscat.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p><strong>Prosecutors believe Fenech arranged the murder to stop Caruana Galizia exposing an allegedly corrupt energy contract awarded to one of Fenech\u2019s companies by the Maltese government.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to documents uncovered in the Panama Papers leak, a Dubai-registered company controled by Fenech, 17 Black, planned to make a $2 million payment to two offshore shell companies owned by two key government figures.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Dramatic Arrest<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fenech was arrested in November 2019 by Maltese armed forces while trying to flee the island on his yacht.<\/p>\n<p>That was a day after the arrest of self-confessed go-between <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/malta-journalist-murder-middleman-theuma-linked-to-casino-heist\/\">Melvin Theuma.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Theuma claims he was the \u201cmiddleman\u201d between Fenech and the assassins, gangster brothers George and Alfred Degiorgio, and their associate, Vince Muscat.<\/p>\n<p>Theuma was granted immunity from prosecution for his role in the murder in return for testifying against his coconspirators. He told police Fenech was the \u201cmastermind\u201d of the plot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Until his arrest, Fenech was CEO of the Tumas Group, one of Malta\u2019s biggest employers. It owns the Qawra Oracle Casino and the Portomaso Casino, as well as the portomasolive.com online gaming website. Fenech remains a major shareholder in the group.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Blatant Lies<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On Thursday, a magistrate\u2019s court in capital Valetta met to consider a complaint filed by Fenech\u2019s legal team.<\/p>\n<p>His lawyers claim police failed to act on their request to investigate Theuma for perjury. They argue his testimony was riddled with \u201chalf-truths,\u201d \u201cblatant lies\u201d and his implication of their client in the plot was \u201ctotal fabrication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Times of Malta<\/em> reports that they cite \u201cextracts from testimonies and secret voice recordings\u201d and plan to introduce three witnesses to testify at the proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Theuma\u2019s lawyers have filed their own application for police to take criminal action against Fenech for calumny and moral violence against their client.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2020, Theuma was found in a critical condition with stab wounds to the neck and abdomen.
