That is pertaining to the acquisition\/retention of professional sports teams between the largest US casino hub and Oakland.<\/p>\n<p>As Major League Baseball\u2019s (MLB) Oakland Athletics appear closer to moving to Las Vegas, Schaaf told a Bay Area <em>ABC <\/em>affiliate on Thursday that <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/oakland-mayor-schaaf-insults-las-vegas-as-as-near-move\/\">Sin City is a \u201cgross desert.\u201d<\/a> \u00a0In today\u2019s era of social media, the mayor\u2019s comments predictably sparked a Twitter kerfuffle. But she didn\u2019t let sleeping dogs lie.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p><strong>I do not, however, apologize for preferring the spectacular vista of our bay, our Bay Bridge, the San Francisco skyline, the sunset over the Pacific Ocean to the desert and some pretty tacky architecture,\u201d<\/strong> said Schaff in an interview with the Bay Area <em>NBC <\/em>affiliate.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The \u201cpretty tacky architecture\u201d comment is being met with similar response to the \u201cgross desert\u201d quip. Adding to that, some design experts refute Schaaf\u2019s assertion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond the various forms of entertainment is a city brimming with impressive design and fine art,\u201d said a 2018 piece in <em>Architectural Digest\u00a0<\/em>highlighting Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>That article features praise not only for various venues on the Strip, but also the Zappos Theatre and the Keep Memory Alive Event Center, among others.<\/p>\n<h2>Las Vegas\/Oakland Rivalry Intensifies<\/h2>\n<p>The A\u2019s want a new waterfront stadium in their current home city. However, such a project in California isn\u2019t just costly, it\u2019s time-consuming as well because of the slew of environmental impact studies and permitting needed to build massive projects along the state\u2019s coastline.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p>Conversely, ground broke on the <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/las-vegas-super-bowl-public-funding-approved-by-tourism-authority\/\">$2 billion Allegiant<\/a> Stadium in Las Vegas in mid-November 2017 and opened in July 2020. Meaning, that had it not been for the coronavirus pandemic, the venue would have hosted fans for Raiders games during the 2020 season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Speaking of the Raiders, the NFL team is the source of the Oakland\/Las Vegas rivalry, having fled California for Nevada in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>However, if the A\u2019s move to Sin City, that\u2019s a 2-0 advantage in favor of Nevada\u2019s largest metro area over its Bay counterpart, meaning it\u2019s not much of a rivalry at all.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Trying to Walk It Back<\/h2>\n<p>As politicians so love to do, Schaaf attempted to walk back her \u201cgross desert\u201d remark in the <em>NBC<\/em> interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen, I respect that everyone \u2026 and I know Mayor (Carolyn G.) Goodman of Las Vegas has gotten into the fray as well. We\u2019re always going to stick up for our cities.
