Following behind highly praised and successful series such as Fallout and Skyrim, players created high expectations for Starfield. With early access to the highly anticipated space RPG released, gamers everywhere were able to get their hands on the title. After embracing the celestial atmosphere around them, many found their experience to be a combination of both lackluster and underwhelming. Due to this, some players began to refund Starfield as it didn’t compare to other games in the genre.

Starfield Feels Like One Step Forward and Two Steps Back

For years Bethesda games always held a specific gaming formula that captured the heart of gamers everywhere. When looking at Skyrim and Fallout they both have similarities in regard to their open-world experience, gameplay mechanics, story, and so much more. Starfield attempts to build off this “Bethesda format”, however, this time gives it a space theme. The problem that’s apparent is the execution of this. Even though Starfield is considered to be an open-world RPG, most of the time players will find themselves on their ship, or contained in a certain area they choose to visit.

While it’s not a complete setback, this can take away the sense of adventure and exploration for those used to Skyrim and Fallout. This has been expressed by numerous posts on the r/Starfield Reddit page from users such as u/No-Dust-2105.

The More You Put In, the More You Get Out of Starfield

The first couple of missions are causing players to refund Starfield. The main missions themselves feel tedious and slow which isn’t keeping the player’s attention. In a majority of reviews from outlets such as Windows Central, they’ve expressed that when compared to Skyrim or Fallout, Starfield doesn’t immediately jump into the action. However, the more players power through, the better it gets. Jez Corden, Managing Editor at Windows Central shared this sentiment in regards to his review on Starfield.

Honestly expected Starfield meta to be lower. Why? It does take a while to get going.

Main quests start off small stakes and grow into incredibly epic moments. I wondered who would stay the course.

You May Love Starfield if You Give It a Chance

Starfield isn’t a game for everyone, that much is clear. For those who want to stick it out and keep playing the game, more than likely they’ll enjoy the space RPG and everything it has to offer players. Unfortunately, if the slow burn is too slow, then a refund will be in the future. Regardless this doesn’t make Starfield a “bad game”. Everyone’s taste in gaming is different and many held high expectations that were either never promised or not met. Much like how there are gamers saying they plan on getting a refund for Starfield, there are also many like Reddit user u/Calorie_Killer_G who are enjoying their time exploring the vast space frontier.
