Martial Arts Brawler Sifu Has a Bottom-Kicking Live Action Short

Sifu At The Cost of Time

Sifu is nearly upon us and to get you in the mood, Slocap have released a nine minute live-action short.

The martial-arts brawler arrives next week, February 8th, and casts you as a fighter seeking vengeance for the murder of their father. Sound familiar? It should, it’s the plot for a metric tonne of kung-fu movies. The twist is that, thanks to a magic talisman, your character can return to life when they fail, with the catch that they age.

So, fail enough times, and your character will die, but each death lets them improve their skill set. The other downside, apart from dying, is that while they may become more skilled, age may make them a little slower. The short illustrates this concept, by showing the protagonist get skewered through the chest. He springs to life, with a bear and a moustache, much to the surprise of his would be killer.

But you could also all but forget about the Sifu connection and just enjoy this for what it is, a very cool, well choreographed martial arts short. Add a bit of grain, in fact, and it could be from any VHS-based martial arts movie. Jungchang Lu, the stunt and fight co-ordinator (who also worked on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) deserves credit for making the fights look so spectacular.

You can get your hands on Sifu when it hits PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox One February 8th 2022. It’ll launch as a digital-only game but physical copies should be coming this Spring.
