Brisbane Lions vs Gold Coast Suns Preview

A big crowd is expected at the Gabba on Saturday night for one of the most highly anticipated Q-Clash games in history.

There were a few nervy moments in the first half, but the Lions kept their top-four chances intact last week with a percentage boosting, 40-point win over the Giants in Canberra.

Things weren’t so golden for the Suns however, a disappointing 48-point loss at Marvel to the Bombers coming as a huge letdown for a team that knocked off Richmond on the siren only a week earlier.

That result makes this a must-win game for coach Stewart Dew, but one look at the odds, and recent history, suggests it’s far from a guarantee.

The Suns have opened +21.5 point outsiders at the line, largely due to the fact they’ve lost seven straight Q-Clash’s dating back to 2018.

The Lions prevailed by 52 points when these two sides met at Metricon back in April as Charlie Cameron and Zac Bailey combined for 10 goals, alongside a handy 30 disposal game from Jarryd Lyons.

Brisbane has hardly been convincing over this last month, but it was encouraging to see the Lions dominate the clearances last week, while coach Chris Fagan admitted he probably should have included Rhys Mathieson in the side much sooner.

It feels as though the Lions have rediscovered some of their grit with Mathieson and Mitch Robinson back in the side, and although the Suns feature a dangerous and largely underrated forward line, their inability to play a full four quarters will likely be their downfall again.
