AMD says the AM5 socket is sticking around until at least 2025

One of the best things about building with AMD hardware in the last few years has been the longevity of the AM4 processor socket, which was the standard for Ryzen CPUs for five years. AMD is hoping to keep that trend going with the AM5 socket that debuted last year with the new motherboards for Ryzen 7000. According to the latest roadmaps, AM5 will be used through 2025 at the very least and possibly beyond.

In a recent video interview with AMD’s David McAfee, OverclockersUK asked the VP and GM of Client Channel Business if the company’s original commitment to support AM5 through 2025 still stands. “It absolutely still stands,” he replied. “I think that we certainly recognize that the longevity of the AM4 platforms was one of the biggest reasons that led to the success of Ryzen. And as we think about the future, 2025 and beyond, that decision to move to a next generation of socket is one that’s going to be really thought through very, very carefully.”

McAfee even left the door open for a longer window of support. “We are firmly committed to 2025, and beyond,” he reiterated, “and we’ll see how long that promise lasts beyond 2025.” It’s a welcome sentiment for anyone who’s bought or thought about buying a B650 or X670 motherboard for the latest Ryzen processors, including the much-loved X3D variants for gaming-focused builds.
