Apex Legends Adds Kill Cams in its Least Popular Mode

After years of waiting, Apex Legends finally added kill cams…but only in its least popular mode.

The Apex Legends x Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth event is well underway, bringing Final Fantasy inspired-skins and weapons to the Battle Royale for the rest of January. To celebrate the upcoming release of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Respawn Entertainment collaborated with Square Enix to create a limited-time event that offers a plethora of rewards, including the universal Buster Sword Heirloom. Plus, players can even summon Nessie with new Materia hop-ups.

The major update came with so much content that a new feature snuck its way into the event without much fanfare from the developers. Once fans explored the patch, though, they quickly realized kill cams are now in the game.

The Apex Legends x Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth event added kill cams to Mixtape mode. The playlist features TDM, Control, and Gun Run. Now, after you die while playing Mixtape, you will see a kill replay of your death.

Unfortunately, the new feature does not extend to Battle Royale. Apex Legends players have been waiting for kill cams in Battle Royale practically since the game launched, similar to the system in place in Call of Duty: Warzone.

Although the latest update did not bring kill cams to Battle Royale mode, perhaps their recent addition is just the first step in an extended process of adding kill cams to Apex Legends.

As of now, it is unclear if kill cams are coming to Battle Royale mode in Apex Legends. Back in 2021, Jason McCord, former Design Director of Apex Legends, revealed that kill cams were simply not a high priority for the developers.

“[Kill cams have] been talked about for final kill,” he wrote on X. “It’s just one of those things that costs memory on the server so we need to make sure it’s worth it. I think it’s rare enough that you win + need a killcam to know what happened that it hasn’t been a priority.

It will be interesting to see if Respawn Entertainment retains that logic moving forward in 2024, or if they finally offer kill cams in Battle Royale
