Bethesda shares plans for Starfield’s first expansion, mod support

Bethesda’s spacefaring role-playing game, Starfield still has many updates to come, according to a new blog post from the developer. The blog post shares that Starfield has enjoyed the biggest launch in Bethesda history, with 13 million players since September. Future updates will release every six weeks or so, and include “everything from quality-of-life improvements to content and feature updates.”

Some of the new features on the way include new ways to travel, and city maps that allow players to jump around large locales like New Atlantis or Akila City. We can also expect more ship customization options, new difficulty settings, the ability to add survival mechanics to the game, as well as sliders that affect carry capacity, vendor credits, and more.

Official mod support is also on the way. In early 2024, Bethesda will release Creations, which includes a Creation Kit and exporter. Mods have traditionally been a huge draw for Bethesda games, and include both massive, game-changing additions or improvements and lots of silly draws, like cool new hairstyles or the ability to summon an onslaught of thousands of cabbages.

The blog post also shares that the first major expansion, titled Shattered Space, is in development and will arrive sometime next year. It will include new story content, locations, and gear. We don’t know much about Shattered Space, and whether it includes new revelations on the Starborn, but we’ll have to wait and see how it comes together.

Players can join the Steam Beta branch to test patches before they go live. It’ll be interesting to see how Starfield comes to life with player mods; they’re some of the most transformative and interesting parts of Bethesda fandom. In the meantime, we’ll need to wait and see how Bethesda’s quality of life fixes improve the Starfield experience.
