Biggest Shifts in NFL Odds to Win the Super Bowl

The roller coaster season of the Baltimore Ravens continues, as the team that needed a desperation fourth-down conversion and a 66-yard field goal to beat winless Detroit and lost to Las Vegas in overtime – and also routed the Los Angeles Chargers on the road – got run out of their own stadium by the upstart Cincinnati Bengals. The learning curve of New England’s rookie quarterback Mac Jones seems to be shortening with each passing week, while the suffering of fellow rookie Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville does not seem to have an end in sight.

Let’s look at how each team’s odds to win the Super Bowl have changed since the season began and talk about some of the biggest surprises.

The Dallas Cowboys continue to get turnovers in bunches, but as they come out of the bye to face Minnesota, one need for the defense is a better track record of getting stops on drives that don’t involve takeaways. On the offensive side of the ball, the team is scoring at will much of the time. One player who has surprised with his production is tight end Dalton Schultz, who had 63 catches for 615 yards and four scores in 2020; this year, he is on pace to catch 88 passes for 1,017 yards and nine scores. He can find openings in coverage, blocks well, and runs well after catching the ball.

The Arizona Cardinals still lead in terms of biggest drop in the odds, as they are off to their best start in 47 years. One player flying a bit under the radar for the Cardinals’ offense is wide receiver Christian Kirk. He is second on the squad with 408 receiving yards and is second in catches. With DeAndre Hopkins and A.J. Green also running routes and getting attention from the defense, that gives Kirk more room to operate. Having tight end Zach Ertz on the team now via trade will make Arizona’s offense even tougher to stop.

The Buffalo Bills have a 4-2 record but should not be mistaken for anything other than a Super Bowl contender as they come out of the bye. They had a disappointing Monday night in Tennessee, but through six games, the Bills have posted two shutouts, and all four wins have been my significant margins. Five of the team’s first six games have come against clubs that made the playoffs a year ago, and now things are about to get a lot easier.

Fans of the Cincinnati Bengals haven’t been this excited since the days of Kenny Anderson and Boomer Esiason (with apologies to the early playoff dalliances by Andy Dalton). Joe Burrow’s reunion with former LSU teammate Ja’Marr Chase has made the Bengals’ offense a fearsome unit. Chase is second in receiving yards in the NFL and has eight catches of at least 30 yards – more than any other wideout. At this rate, he will break the franchise record for receiving yards in a season, set in 2007 by Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson.
