EA SPORTS WRC is revealed!

For years we’ve had the WRC series of video games from Nacon and KT Racing. Whilst they’ve been decent at times, rarely did the franchise feel like it was moving on. But now the FIA World Rally Championship is powering on down the straight, with EA and Codemasters taking control of the wheel. Today that sees the announcement of EA SPORTS WRC – as EA and Codies build from the DiRT up!

EA SPORTS WRC is the new official game of the FIA World Rally Championships. And if we’re honest, we’re super excited at where this one will go. If anyone knows how to deliver a rally game to the masses, it’s Codemasters. And with that EA backing…

Built from the DiRT up!

Due to release on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, EA SPORTS WRC is being put together by the team behind the critically acclaimed DiRT Rally series. It’s that Codemasters team which has no less than quarter-of-a-century of off-road gaming history behind it. And that means the first, truly next-gen, rally game should be one to appeal.

Powered by Unreal Engine, EA SPORTS WRC will come with everything you would expect of a blockbusting rally title. Dynamic handling systems, photo-realism, true-to-life control and more should all be present. And you won’t have to wait long to get it either – EA SPORTS WRC is releasing come November 3rd 2023. Better still, early access can be had via pre-order. That will give you the chance to get behind the wheel on October 31st 2023. Those pre-orders will also deliver five VIP Rally Passes to the player, providing access to additional post-launch content.

“EA SPORTS WRC is the purest form of motorsport where every stage is a fight against the clock, the terrain, and yourself,” said Ross Gowing, Senior Creative Director at Codemasters. “This is the rally game we’ve always wanted to make, combining our studio’s deep knowledge and expertise with the power of the official WRC license representing the pinnacle of rally motorsport. The game’s new engine has enabled us to push rally to the edge of what’s deemed possible, and the additional features, including Builder and Moments, give players even more ways to interact with the sport they love.”

EA SPORTS WRC is Unreal powered

This is a game that should easily deliver. By combining the power of the Unreal Engine with the DiRT Rally series physics, EA SPORTS WRC wioll include longer, more detailed stages than previously possible. There will be no less than 18 official FIA World Rally Championship locations (Central Europe Rally coming post-launch) and over 600km of unforgiving asphalt, gravel, and snow stages.

The game also boasts 10 current WRC, WRC2, and Junior WRC vehicles and 68 of the most iconic rally cars spanning 60 years of the sport. As you’d expect to hear, EA and Codemasters have spent time working together with official WRC teams and manufacturers, such as Ford, Toyota, and Hyundai. This means each vehicle is built to tackle every challenge they’ll face throughout the season. The hybrid-powered 4WD Rally1 cars are some of the fastest in the sport’s history, capable of incredible speeds while tackling gravity-defying jumps, deteriorating surfaces, and adverse weather.

The best Xbox rally game?

Further the advanced Dynamic Handling System refines Codemasters’ original model and gives players the most realistic off-road experience to date. It comes via feedback from drivers, including former FIA Junior WRC title contender and 2023 FIA European Rally Championship ERC3 champion, and game designer Jon Armstrong. Players can choose a professional driver set-up mirroring the experience drivers encounter every race week.

It won’t just be a game for the sim fans either. New players can personalise the handling, enabling them to make adjustments to help them master the ultimate player versus environment off-road challenge. The realism extends to audio, with each car intricately replicated, and new pace notes, including simplified commands for rookie drivers, give much-needed information to the player as they battle through each stage.

Need more? Well, the introduction of Builder fulfils the dream of those longing to build their very own modern-era rally car. Select the chassis, body shells, and all-important mechanical parts before customising the interior and exterior, finally personalising with the livery editor. You’ll certainly get to put the car through its paces and make any necessary adjustments before competing for the World Championship against the best competition WRC has to offer.

EA SPORTS WRC will also cater for 32 player cross-platform multiplayer, allowing for competition between friends and the community. It’ll also make the most of EA Racenet, EA’s racing companion app. That will allow Clubs to serve as community-built hubs. And they should be found offering custom multi-surface tournaments with rallying at any location and time of year.

Throw in personalised events, Moments, updated daily in-game, and players will have the chance to relive pivotal scenarios from the 2023 season alongside classic events from the sport’s archives.

For now get down onto that trailer below and then prepare yourself. EA SPORTS WRC is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC. The official street release is November 3rd, but pre-order and you’ll be playing in October. Just.

Remember though, EA SPORTS WRC is a new-gen only game. You won’t be able to play on Xbox One or PlayStation 4.
