Colts LB Darius Leonard Undergoes Back Surgery

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Darius Leonard has apparently undergone back surgery on Tuesday. This surgery will preclude him from taking part in any preseason activities. It is the hope of the Colts that Leonard will be ready to return to the field by the time the regular season begins.

PFF’s Ari Meirov reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

#Colts All-Pro LB Darius Leonard underwent back surgery today and he’ll likely be sidelined into training camp, per HC Frank Reich. Expectation is he’ll have more than enough time to be back when the games matter.

In 2021, Leonard was selected to his third consecutive Pro Bowl. He had 122 tackles, eight pass defenses and a massive four interceptions at the linebacker spot. He also missed just one game last season, which was unrelated to the back surgery he just received.

Leonard is currently on the second year of a five-year, $99.25 million deal. Over $52 million of that contract is guaranteed. If he is unavailable for any amount of time in the regular season, it will hurt the Colts’ chances in the AFC South, being that he is essentially the quarterback for that defense.
