Development team Brain Seal are jumping back into the quite frankly packed rogue-lite genre, with the release of Dark Quest 3, taking elements from the more conventional previous Dark Quest titles, but adding the addictive nature of Hades, Enter the Gungeon and more.

We reviewed Dark Quest 2 way back when in 2019, and were pleased with its fun, but albeit simple, dungeon-crawling fare. Now, with the release of Dark Quest 3 on Xbox and PlayStation (following previous launches on PC and Switch), perhaps the draw of death, upgrading, and death again is what the series needs to push on.

What is Dark Quest 3?

Starting off at hero camp with a party of merry warriors, the goal of each run through Dark Quest 3 is to venture through the world’s many diverse areas, and eventually put a stop to an evil, magical force arising in the East. Along the way, you will fight off against over 60 types of monsters, draw cards and roll dice to shape how your run plays out and… inevitably die, only to try the whole thing over again!

Dark Quest 3 puts a huge emphasis on choice, not only with the 12 heroes to choose from, each with unique abilities and synergies, but also in deciding which areas to conquer, based on your party’s strengths and weaknesses. The scope for replayability is immense for this very reason, drawing you back to this fantasy world, time and time again.

What are the key features?

A full list of features in Dark Quest 3, according to the game’s Steam page, includes:

  • 12 heroes and over 60 monsters
  • Procedurally generated adventures and combat
  • Rogue-lite experience where you create a party of heroes and play until you win or die
  • 13 areas to play with over 150 adventure cards
  • Survive the skull of fate and the sorcerer’s magic
  • Tactical based turn based combat with controlled random numbers
  • 80+ combat cards ranging from spells, weapons, potions and equipment
  • Unique art world that looks, feels and plays like a tabletop
  • Voice over for the sorcerer playing the role of the Dungeon Master

This action-packed table-top rogue-lite is now available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, PC and Switch. Over on the Xbox Store, Dark Quest 3 is now listed for £15.74. We’ll let you know if this one is worth playing in review.
