Editorial: Why Golden Sun Needs An HD-2D Remake

One RPG series from Nintendo that has a devoted fanbase is Golden Sun, which originated on the GBA and later received an entry on the Nintendo DS. The games were turn-based RPGs that made use of the character’s abilities to enable a number of unique puzzles, but you would need to interact with the environments in certain ways in the overworld. It was something different while still being familiar at the same time.

There was also a very detailed battle system, including the use of summons, and stacking your attacks for more offense. You would also need to plan out your use of psyenergy and the Djiin would affect your abilities as well. Each character had a unique element to them, and mixing things up would open new possibilities.

There has been debate about where the series should go next, but why not go back to where it all started and remake the first two games? This would not be a full 3D remake of the games, however, but something else that would be familiar to Nintendo fans. What is being proposed here is that Camelot and Nintendo should follow Square Enix’s lead with games like Live A Live, Octopath Traveller and the upcoming Dragon Quest III Remake and make it an HD-2D Remake.

An HD-2D remake of the games would allow the already good-looking visuals to truly shine in a gorgeous new way and allow the games to get a new audience. The battles, already a high point for how they were handled, could be taken to new heights without being held back by a lack of power and could show off truly amazing effects. In addition, both of the GBA games could be combined into a single experience like originally intended, or left as two separate games, but with content originally planned for the games added back in.

The series has a massive amount of fan support behind it, even more now than ever, and Nintendo has been good about getting high-quality RPG series for the Switch library. Golden Sun is rooted in traditional RPGs, even with its many unique quirks. That style of gaming still has a lot of support and Golden Sun would be perfect for Nintendo to revive on their systems, especially if done in the same style Live A Live and Octopath Traveller were.
