While everyone is excited about the next part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake Project titled “Rebirth” which is due to release in early 2024. Many have probably forgotten about the other game that was announced alongside that.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is a free-to-play mobile game and another take on the Final Fantasy VII Remake people have been clamoring for since the early 2000s. Visually it is much closer to the original release but it also wants to be so much more than that.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis Release Date

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis will be available on iOS and Android devices on September 7, 2023. You can pre-register to unlock more bonuses on both the App Store and Google Play.

With over 1.5 million players pre-registered and a very successful beta period, Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis might be one of the underdogs in the mobile space this year. In comparison, Geshin Impact’s successor Honkai Star Rail had over 20 million players registered before its release earlier this year.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis Explained

Which begs the question, what is Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis exactly? It’s a live-service game and remake of the original Final Fantasy VII. Instead of the hyperrealistic renders of the FFVII Remake which launched in 2020, it will go for a more stylized look similar to the PlayStation One release from 1997.

Combat-wise, it will feature similar turn-based combat mechanics you’ve already seen in other mobile titles such as Honkai Star Rail. It will also feature a Gacha system in which you draw weapons and outfits for characters. So no need to fuss over having to cycle out your favorites.

As for the game itself, it will feature key moments from the entire compilation of Final Fantasy VII. Not just the original but also the recently remade Crisis Core and the now-defunct First Soldier are confirmed to be part of the game’s story.

And it is left to be seen and probably depending on how successful this game is, if other stories from the Final Fantasy VII Compilation are added. Things such as Before Crisis, the mobile game centered around the Turks which was never released in the West, and the movie Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus would also be no-brainers.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake proved that there is much more material set in the world of Final Fantasy VII that can be pulled from. There are a lot of books, CD Dramas, and supplemental material that have been created by original scenario writer Kazushige Nojima that never made it out of Japan.

But one of the biggest hurdles to Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis’ success here in the West will be its release platform. Mobile games are not as big here and the Gacha and daily grinds will most likely turn off many potential players.

The Battle Royale title that Square Enix released in 2021 Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier struggled to find an audience here. While the game itself was fine, no one wanted to play a Battle Royale on mobile which is already a very competitive space as it is. Square Enix could probably remedy that this time around by releasing an official PC and Console port.
