Game developer and publisher Epic Games, the owner of both Fortnite and Rocket League, has announced that Fortnite will host an in-game, interactive gameplay experience for the Rocket League World Championship.
A ‘Rocket League Live Worlds island’ will be set-up inside Fortnite, with a Team Rumble Fortnite match played amongst the audience.
By linking Rocket League Competitive data with data devices in the Rocket League Live island, the interactive experience will see gameplay on the island affected depending on which RLCS team wins.
Fans can support specific teams based on World Championship outcomes. Every time a fan’s supported team scores a goal, they’ll gain a power-up on the Rocket League Live island.
In-game rewards are also available in both Fortnite and Rocket League.
Epic Games bought Rocket League developer Psyonix in 2019. It has since introduced cross-title events and themed in-game items in Rocket League and Fortnite in a bid to introduce crossover between the two titles’ player bases, which both skew younger.
The Rocket League World Championship is the culmination of the 2021-22 season of the RLCS, Rocket League’s flagship developer-run tournament circuit.
The $2m (~£1.65m) prize pool tournament is being held in the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, United States, through the first two weeks of August.
