Grand Theft Auto 6 Reportedly In Development Hell

Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto 6 has been one of the most anticipated games around since practically the day after GTA V was released. Given that prior to GTA V, the time between games in the series was typically 4-5 years, it’s understandable that fans of the series are anxious for news. It has now been 8 years since GTA V was originally released and we still don’t even have an official announcement that Grand Theft Auto 6 is on the way.

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise to learn that GTA 6 is in development hell. That’s according to Chris Klippel of Rockstar Mag. During a Q&A, Chris claimed that GTA 6 has been in “development hell” and that the project has been restarted at least once. Chris also claimed that Rockstar has had to change the story and other elements of the game multiple times since it was restarted in 2019.

The 2019 restart of the game came after Rockstar founder Dan Houser left the studio. Dan Houser was Vice-President of Creativity at Rockstar. Red Dead Redemption 2, Dan Houser’s last game at Rockstar, is largely attributed to him. Particularly, the story and creative elements of the game. As GTA 6 was restarted when he left the company and seems to have been in development hell since then, it’s possible that Rockstar hasn’t been able to fill the void he left behind.

Chris also claimed that Take-Two (Rockstar’s publisher) had been planning to announce GTA 6 last year. It’s unclear when they decided not to announce the game and whether the plan to announce the game was from before or after the 2019 restart. Whatever is going on with the development of the game, it doesn’t look like we will be getting an announcement anytime soon. Even though fans have already been waiting eight years for Grand Theft Auto 6, it looks like the wait could be significantly longer.
