Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition PlayStation File Sizes Are Are Way Bigger Than Originals

Each of the games in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on PlayStation are bigger than the original versions–stating the obvious here, as remasters are always larger–but they’re quite notably heftier. According to the info Twitter user PlaystationSize dug up, GTA III and GTA Vice City’s Definitive Editions are almost five times as large as the PS2 versions on PS4. GTA San Andreas’ version gap is even more impressive: The new edition will take up nearly seven times as much storage space as its original counterpart.

Since the GTA Definitive Editions clearly dwarf their original counterparts in file size, could they imply significant changes or improvements? Well, maybe. Certainly, an ambitious rework like FF7 Remake is out of the question, but Rockstar has promised better graphics and smoother gameplay.

Rockstar stated that there will be “GTA V-inspired modern controls,” along with “across-the-board visual enhancements” including resolution upgrades and “improved visual fidelity across the world.” One of those visual improvements is a completely revamped lighting system, improving the definition of look of shadows, environmental objects, and characters. The games will also be able to run at 4K/60fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Note also that while PlayStationSize’s track record has been pretty good–they’ve generally been correct about their numbers–neither Rockstar nor PlayStation has confirmed the final sizes of the GTA Definitive Edition games.

GTA: The Trilogy will be released on November 11 for $60. A digital edition will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. A physical edition will release a little later, on December 7, and will be available for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PS4.

If you have Xbox Game Pass, the standalone GTA: San Andreas The Definitive Edition will be available on the service starting November 11. If you own PlayStation Now, GTA III The Definitive Edition will be available on the platform starting December 7.
