Below is a full list of the best PS4 puzzle games. Presented in no particular order, these are our favourites in the genre, as determined by our editorial team.
The Witness (PS4)
Jonathan Blow turned puzzle games on their head with Braid, and he’s done it all over again with The Witness on PS4. Taking place on a mysterious island littered with screens, it’s a game all about getting from A to B through countless mazes. The genius in its design is how it wordlessly teaches you a language of rules and symbols; all you need to do is apply that knowledge. Cue endless ah-ha moments and secrets galore as you slowly discover more. An extraordinary game.
Carto (PS4)
Publisher: Humble Games / Developer: Sunhead Games
Carto is an adorable puzzle adventure title about a young cartographer on a journey back to her family. The main hook is the ability to open up the in-game map, move and shift the terrain’s layout, and then explore the newly rearranged landscape. You’ll need to do this to solve various environmental puzzles and help a cast of loveable characters with their quests. This is a feel-good game that doesn’t outstay its welcome and offers a chilled out puzzling experience.
Kine (PS4)
Publisher: Chump Squad / Developer: Chump Squad
Here’s an oddball puzzle game for you. In Kine, you play as three distinct beings made up of musical instruments, and it’s your job to guide them through grid-based levels in order for them to form a band. The cel-shaded visuals and jazzy soundtrack give this game a unique style, and the gameplay, while simple, becomes very challenging pretty quickly.
Bridge Constructor Portal (PS4)
Publisher: Headup Games / Developer: Headup Games
The Bridge Constructor series is one we never thought would cross over with Valve’s Portal, but here we are. The combination is a surprisingly good one, and sees you building structures over large chasms, eventually employing those iconic orange and blue gateways. It becomes a mind-bending, physics-driven puzzler that forces you to get creative with your bridge designs. If you’ve missed GLaDOS, her hilariously disparaging commentary will definitely put a grin on your face.

GNOG (PS4)
GNOG is a strange but wonderful little puzzler. Each level presents you with a monster’s head, and all you have to do is poke around and see what happens. Solving each stage doesn’t take a lot of brain power, but all the levels are gorgeously colourful and full of great little interactions. It’s a shame it wraps up so quickly, but it’s consistently charming throughout. PSVR support means you can get a whole new perspective on it, too.
Roundguard (PS4)
Publisher: The Quantum Astrophysicists Guild / Developer: Wonderbelly Games
We’d forgive you for having not heard about Roundguard, but it’s well worth a try. It’s a strange mix of Peggle-style gameplay with rogue-like elements. That combination works surprisingly well — you choose a character with unique traits and work your way through a randomly generated dungeon, but the gameplay is very reminiscent of the PopCap classic. Addictive and challenging, this one could keep you busy for a long time.
Tricky Towers (PS4)
Publisher: WeirdBeard / Developer: WeirdBeard
In a nutshell, Tricky Towers takes Tetris and applies physics to it. There’s more to it than that, of course, but you can already imagine the chaos. Building a tower is much harder when you have to factor in weight and balance, but throw in special power-ups and character abilities, and things get crazy very fast. Multiplayer is where it’s at, but you can also test your skills in single player too.
Peggle 2 (PS4)
Publisher: Electronic Arts / Developer: PopCap Games
We don’t care who you are, Peggle is a modern classic, and the sequel on PS4 is just as good. All you need to do is fire a ball into a level filled with coloured pegs, and watch as it ping-pongs around, scooping up points and clearing obstacles. It’s simple, but oh so satisfying, and it’s impossible to be in a bad mood when a game celebrates victory as much as this one. Get Peggle 2 in your life.
Superliminal (PS4)
Publisher: Pillow Castle / Developer: Pillow Castle
Superliminal is all about perspective. Objects that are far away are actually within reach — they’re just small. It’s a mind bending concept that’s explored in some fun ways throughout the short set of levels. Clearly inspired by the likes of Portal, there’s also a funny and surprisingly uplifting story at its heart. It’s the unique core mechanic that holds everything together, though. If you’re after a fresh spin on first person puzzling, give this one a go.
Tetris Effect (PS4)
Publisher: Enhance Games / Developer: Enhance Games
Sometimes, you can’t beat a classic, and Tetris Effect is one of the best versions of this age old game. Playable in PSVR or on your TV, this magnificent iteration fuses the timeless gameplay with absolutely stellar audiovisual feedback. Tetris has never been so visually engaging as it is here, and top notch tunes make it a pleasure to play over and over again. With plenty of optional modes to try, this is a fantastic way to experience this seminal puzzler.
