Sony’s flagship racing franchise has been steadily evolving since launch, and now finds itself at the front of the pack. Polyphony Digital has rectified release day concerns with regular free updates, while its outstanding handling model and online racing remain the very best-in-class. It also looks lightyears ahead of the competition at times – especially on the supercharged PS4 Pro hardware.

Horizon Chase Turbo

This indie arcade racing title might not look like much, but it’s a surprisingly good little game with acres of content. Inspired by 90s racers like Top Gear and OutRun, the game features hundreds of races, plenty of unlockable cars to use and upgrade, and a handful of modes to master. What’s more, you can play it all in split-screen local multiplayer. Horizon Chase Turbo is a slick, addictive, ultra-fast racer that punches above its weight.

MotoGP 20

If you prefer two wheels instead of four, Milestone’s latest licensed motorbike racing title is king of the road. With all the official teams, riders, and locations from this year’s season, this tough sim racer offers up a stern challenge as you compete for grand prix glory. It offers a stern challenge and doesn’t hold your hand at all, making it a little daunting to get into. However, there’s plenty to like about this game, including the historic content that sees you unlocking the sport’s most famous faces. Well worth a try.

Sprint Vector

Another PlayStation VR entry here, but Sprint Vector is well worth highlighting. Using two PS Move controllers, you pump your arms like you’re running on the spot, and it’s this simple action that makes the game such a joy. The intuitive controls will have you screaming through each race course as you run, jump, and glide through corners and obstacles. It’s a little light on content, but this is an enjoyably physical racing game PSVR owners should check out. It’s a pretty good workout, too.

GRID

This PS4 reboot sees the return of a series with a bumpy history. Thankfully, GRID on PS4 is a rock solid racing game that recaptures a little of the franchise’s magic. The handling is great, finding a perfect balance between arcade and simulation, and the career mode is robust, with plenty of variety in its event types. Repetition may set in when you start to see the same tracks over and over, and the game lacks a certain spark, but the core racing action makes this well worth your time.
