Heisman Trophy Rankings: Week 6

The Heisman Trophy is awarded in December each year to the player that voters think is the best in college football. Here are Heisman Trophy rankings: Week 6.

1. C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State Buckeyes

The odds-on favorite remains in the top spot through the first five weeks of play. Stroud has passed for 1,376 yards, 18 touchdowns and two interceptions on 68.7 percent completion. His stats put him on pace to be Heisman-worthy.

While he doesn’t have a “Heisman Moment” yet this season, Stroud has helped the Buckeyes go undefeated through five games. Their most notable wins are over Notre Dame and Wisconsin, but how valuable the wins end up being is the real question. If Stroud keeps on playing like he has and the Buckeyes keep on winning, he could go home with the Heisman.

2. Will Anderson, EDGE, Alabama Crimson Tide

If the award were truly given to the best player in college football, Anderson would likely win it. Defenders rarely win though, so Anderson is going to have to go above and beyond to get the recognition he deserves. He has 27 tackles, nine tackles for loss and five sacks through five games. He also has an interception returned for a touchdown.

His impact on the game can’t be understated, but he will need to do even more to win the Heisman. Andeson will need to increase his sack production and maybe force some more turnovers to win the award, even if he is a player that can change a gameplan for opponents. If he plays well in the SEC, he can have some big enough moments to build some momentum.

3. Bryce Young, QB, Alabama Crimson Tide

The reigning Heisman-winner Young has had a fine season so far. He has led Alabama to an undefeated record and has had to be clutch in certain situations. Young has passed for 1,202 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions on 67.2 percent completion. He has also rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns, which is an element of his game that was not active last season.

There might be a few problems with Young winning the Heisman. One problem is that it is very hard for a player to win the Heisman twice, as it has happened just once before (kudos Archie Griffin). The other is that he currently has a sprained shoulder. He is currently listed as day to day and already missed over half of Alabama’s matchup with Arkansas. If he misses a game, it really sets him back in the Heisman race.

4. Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee hasn’t had a quarterback as talented as Hooker in quite some time. He has thrown just two interceptions since taking over as the starter last season and three interceptions total since the start of the 2021 season. In 2022, he has 1,193 passing yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions on 71.1 percent completion.

Hooker has helped the Volunteers defeat Pittsburgh on the road and Florida at home already. It looks like Tennessee is on the way to their best season in recent memory and a lot of that credit goes to Hooker and the high-powered offense. He still has plenty of games left to continue his great play and work his way up these rankings. A game this week against LSU gives him another big opportunity.

5. Blake Corum, RB, Michigan Wolverines

Corum wasn’t among the Heisman favorites to start the season, but he has delivered so far for Michigan. He has rushed for 611 yards and 10 touchdowns already this season. To go with his rushing statistics, Corum has four rushes for 20 yards.

Michigan has played a very easy schedule so far, but that will change coming up. If Corum can keep his pace up, he should be a Heisman Finalist. It is always hard for non-quarterbacks to win the award, but Corum is exceeding any expectations set for him. The games against Penn State and Ohio State will be a key for his Heisman hopes.

Other Notable Players in the Race

Caleb Williams, QB, USC Trojans– Williams has gotten off to a tremendous start for the Trojans and is now waiting for a marquee game to show his talent to a national audience.

Drake Maye, QB, UNC Tar Heels- Maye has statistically been one of the best quarterbacks in the country. The question for him is whether the Tar Heels can win enough big games to really get him in contention for the award.

Jalon Daniels, QB, Kansas Jayhawks- Any quarterback that can have Kansas undefeated through five games deserves some consideration, but Daniels is also playing very well from a stats perspective.

Chase Brown, RB, Illinois Fighting Illini- Can a running back at Illinois win the award? Who knows, but Brown has 733 rushing yards in five games played, which puts him on pace for almost 1,800 rushing yards.

Bijan Robinson, RB, Texas Longhorns- Robinson had the best odds of any running back before the season and his stats are solid. The problem is that Texas has two losses in the first five weeks of the season.
