How to Get Avada Kedavra in Hogwarts Legacy

The unforgivable killing curse makes an appearance in Avalanche’s latest game. So, how to get Avada Kedavra in Hogwarts Legacy? Here’s the answer

In Avalanche Software’s latest game, Hogwarts Legacy, you get to play as a 5th-year student attending the magical school Hogwarts. On your journey through the wizarding world, you can master many different spells that help you defeat enemies and solve puzzles as you unravel the main story.

However, one thing that surprised many fans of the universe who played the game is that you can also get access to the three unforgivable curses. Yep – even the infamous Avada Kedavra!

If you’ve already finished the game without unlocking these spells, we got you covered. Here’s our complete guide on how to master the killing curse and trample your enemies with the press of a button.

What are the Unforgivable Curses?

In J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, there are three unforgivable curses that we see in the Harry Potter books and movies. They also appear on the spin-off series “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

The three curses are:

  1. The Imperius Curse allows one to control someone else’s mind.
  2. The Cruciatus Curse lets one torture another.

And finally,

  1. Avada Kedavra, the killing curse.

These are dark curses whose use is strictly forbidden by the Ministry of Magic (the government in the Wizarding World). While using them in the Wizarding World comes with dire consequences, in Hogwarts Legacy, they can serve as powerful tools that can help you overcome foes without breaking a sweat.

How to Get Avada Kedavra in Hogwarts Legacy?

Unlocking Avada Kedavra in Hogwarts Legacy requires you to follow Sebastian Swallow’s relationship quest line, including “In the Shadow of Hope.” You also need to complete the main quest, “Logdok’s Loyalty,” before you can access the quest to unlock the killing curse.

The quest to unlock the spell is called “In the Shadow of Relic.” If you’ve completed the required quests, it should show up in your Quest tab right away.

Now, the game recommends you be at least level 28 before you attempt it. It’s a tough mission involving you having to beat hordes of Inferi and a boss, so make sure you’re ready to take them on. Stocking up on Wiggenweld and Maxima Potions can make things easier.

If you’ve explored the world, as we said in our tips and tricks, you should be strong enough to tackle this quest.

Travel to the location marked for the quest, and you’ll find Ominis Gaunt standing outside the Fieldcroft Catacombs. Talk to him to start the mission.

Proceed through the mission; it’s pretty straightforward with some small puzzles, so we won’t spoil anything for you.

Once you escort Sebastian Swallow outside the Catacombs, a cutscene will play. You will have two dialogue options:

  • No one should know that curse
  • Everyone should know that curse

Choose the option “Everyone should know that curse,” and then after some more interaction between you and Sebastian, you’ll get another dialogue option:

  • Now is not the time.
  • Yes Please

Choose “Yes Please”. Then Sebastian will proceed to teach you the killing curse.

This is the earliest you can get the killing curse unless you pre-ordered the game or bought the deluxe or collector’s edition. In these editions, you can access the Dark Arts Battle Arena, where you can try out all three unforgivable curses whenever you want.

You can also buy the Dark Arts Pack later if you want to access the Dark Arts Battle Arena. The Dark Arts Battle Arena is located northeast of the Hogwarts Castle, inside the Forbidden Forest.

What if You choose the Wrong Option?

If you wanted to be the good guy and avoided learning the killing curse when you had the chance, that doesn’t mean you have to restart the game to get it. You have one more way to access Avada Kedavra.

For this method, you need to complete the next mission in Sebastian Swallow’s relationship quest line, In the Shadow of Fate.

At the end of this quest, you’ll talk to Ominis in the Undercroft area and get two dialogue options:

  • We should turn Sebastian in.
  • We should not turn Sebastian in.

If you refuse to turn Sebastian in, the quest ends. At this point, exit the Undercroft and re-enter it. You’ll find Sebastian standing in the room.

You can now talk to him to learn the killing curse. If you’ve missed any of the other unforgivable curses until this point, you can also learn them now.

However, if you choose the option “We should turn Sebastian in.” you won’t be able to learn the curse unless you start a new game.

You can still play through the next side-quest, “In the Shadow of Friendship,” but Sebastian Swallow will not appear. He will be replaced by Ominis Gaunt in the mission.

Punishment for Using Avada Kedavra

Those well-versed in the laws of the wizarding world might be wondering if there are any consequences for using the unforgivable killing curse. It’s a big deal in the books and the movies, after all.

Thankfully, in Hogwarts Legacy, there’s no morality or honor system for you to worry about. You can use Avada Kedavra as many times as you want, and it won’t impact the story in any way.

Using this spell makes many fights extremely trivial. The spell has a cooldown of around 2 minutes, but it literally one-shots all bosses and enemies except the final boss in the main storyline.

Upgrading the spell in the Dark Arts Talent Tree once you reach level 22 and combining it with other curses in your arsenal can help you bring down multiple enemies at a go. So don’t worry about using it to get out of a sticky situation.

To Kill or Not to Kill

Whether you decide to use Avada Kedavra is ultimately up to you. However, the fact remains that it can be a useful tool in the right situation. Unlocking the curse and not using it might just be better than not having access to it at all.

In our opinion, if you’ve bought the game and want to try out everything that Hogwarts Legacy has to offer, then there’s no reason to miss it.

So there you have it – our complete guide on how to unlock Avada Kedavra should help you add a powerful curse to your arsenal. Good luck, and happy hunting!
