How to make a balloon in Lego Fortnite

Crafting a small or large balloon in Lego Fortnite and attaching it to a dynamic platform is the easiest way to get up high — which is useful for when you want to use your glider, say. But, just like a glider, making a balloon takes a lot of midgame infrastructure.

Our Lego Fortnite guide will explain how to craft a balloon and everything you’ll need to build before you can make one.

To craft a small balloon in Lego Fortnite, you’ll need 1 silk fabric, 1 torch, and 1 cord. For a large balloon, you’ll need 2 silk fabric, 1 torch, and 1 cord.

Silk fabric starts with silk thread, so you’ll need a spinning wheel first. That requires 8 planks, 5 wooden rods, 5 wood, and 5 wolf claws. At a spinning wheel, you can turn spider silk into silk thread.

To turn that thread into silk fabric, you’ll need a loom (9 flexwood, 8 flexwood rods, and 6 sand claws from desert wolves). At a loom, you can turn 5 silk thread into 1 silk fabric.

You’ll also need the spinning wheel to turn 5 vines into 1 cord.

Balloons don’t drop materials when you destroy them

Before you go too far with making balloons, know that balloons (and other vehicle parts like wheels and thrusters) don’t drop resources when you destroy them. The resources just disappear.

How to use a balloon in Lego Fortnite

The most straightforward use for a balloon is to just attach it to a dynamic foundation (4 flexwood). With just those two ingredients, you’ve got a basic hot air balloon that will carry you straight up (just make sure you’re standing on the foundation when you attach the balloon — we learned this the hard way). The problem is that your balloon just kind of stays up in the sky.

You can, if you want, throw on an activation switch (1 wood and 1 blast powder) and a small thruster (1 wooden rod, 1 blast powder, and 1 torch) or two. When you hit the switch, your balloon will rocket off in the direction the thruster is pointing. At the moment, there are no steering wheels in Lego Fortnite, so if you want to choose the direction you go, you’re going to have to get creative.

You can get a balloon to descend by building onto its platform and adding weight. For one large balloon and one dynamic platform, you’ll need to build about 10 4x4x2 foundations to get it to drop all the way back down to the ground.
