How to rescue Volo in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 presents players with various characters who have tumbled into big trouble. One such character is Volo, a bard held captive by a cruel goblin mistress. His situation isn’t likely to improve unless you step in to lend a hand. Here is our guide detailing how to rescue Volo in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 – how to rescue Volo

You can initially meet Volo in the Emerald Grove region. Then you will meet him again in the Goblin Camp area. However, you do not need to encounter him at the first location in order to meet him at the second one. Whatever your acquaintance level, you rescue Volo by outwitting the goblin who has captured him.

The Goblin Camp is located near the far western edge of the map. Reach it by heading west from Blighted Village. Upon arriving, your attention will be drawn to Volo, who is performing at the camp’s center. His performance isn’t all that great, but it’s sufficient to please his number one fan, a goblin named Gribbo. She is also his captor. Once the bard’s performance concludes, follow up so you can free Volo from captivity.

Volo is kept in a cage near the back of the area, in an upper room. The camp is not large, so you should find the chamber easily enough. On my first visit, I was fiendishly clever and stole a cup while someone was watching me. Then I had to escape from jail before I could tend to Volo. While that was interesting, I actually suggest not stealing things. Head directly to the upper chamber to find Volo in his cage with Gribbo nearby.

Gribbo is possessive, but you can convince her to part with Volo. There are a few ways to discuss the matter with her that might lead to that outcome. I went with the Deception approach, where I theorized that Volo won’t last long in the cage. This seems to be a good way to go. The difficulty class for that option is 10. A charmer such as a bard with the School of Lore subclass gets a bonus of five points, meaning you only need to roll a five or higher. If you want to know more about that, check our ranked guide to the best Bard subclasses.

Apparently, reading Gribbo’s mind also helps. She has concerns about keeping Volo captive. You can mention those concerns to make your point. Naturally, you can also try fighting your way out of the camp. That strikes me as an especially bad idea, though, given the heavy goblin presence.

Once you secure Volo’s freedom, he’ll head to your camp.
