How To Use Perks In Call Of Duty: Vanguard Zombies

Call of Duty: Vanguard is now available with the new Der Anfang Zombies map, which is an objective-based experience with demonic themes, new features, and this brings major changes to the mode’s iconic perk system.

How To Unlock All Perks

In Der Anfang, there are five perks that you can equip. These won’t look like the traditional perk vending machines that are typically found in Treyarch’s Zombies mode. To fit the map’s occult themes, Der Anfang uses gothic-looking fountains that you can interact with to obtain one of the mode’s new perks. Each perk fountain will be locked behind an objective barrier. After completing the challenge objective, the barrier will disappear and give you access to a new section of the map. This is how you will unlock each perk.

It’s important to grab the perk as soon as you unlock it, because for the first time in Zombies history, you don’t have to pay for the base perks in Vanguard Zombies. Also, these perks may look different and use different names, but you’ll be familiar with the buffs that they grant if you’ve played Zombies before.

Here are all five perk types and where you can find them on Der Anfang:

Fiendish Fortitude

This is Der Anfang’s rebranding of the classic Juggernog perk, which increases your health. Complete the challenge in the southwest corner of fountain square to access this area. The Fiendish Fortitude perk fountain will be easily seen in the doorway to the area’s office building.

Diabolical Damage

This perk increases your critical damage, which is essentially the iconic Double Tap perk. To the left of the Fiendish Fortitude perk fountain, you will find another challenge barrier. Completing this next objective grants you access to the Apartments section of the map to access the Diabolical Damage perk fountain.

Venomous Vigor

This perk boosts your health regeneration speed. This new perk takes inspiration from Black Ops Cold War’s Quick Revive with the faster health regeneration, but unlike the iconic Quick Revive ability, this perk will not revive you if you go down or offer faster revive times–this only gives you faster health regen. You gain access to this perk fountain by completing the objective located to the north of Stalingrad’s main square. It is located in the Panzer Column East section of the map.

Demonic Frenzy

This perk boosts your reload speed, which is a rebranding of the Speed Cola perk. If you turn left from the Venomous Vigor fountain, there will be another challenge barrier. Behind this barrier is where you will find the Demonic Frenzy fountain in the Boiler Room.

Aethereal Haste

This perk boosts your movement speed, which works similar to the Stamin-Up perk. The Aethereal Haste perk fountain is accessed by completing the objective to the east of Fountain Square. The perk is inside the Theater location.

How To Upgrade All Perks

Tier 2 perk cost 2,500

Vanguard Zombies lets you upgrade your perks, but this works a bit differently than Black Ops Cold War. Previously, you could upgrade the perk abilities in the menus using a currency of Aetherium Crystals earned from match rewards. Paying the upgrade costs was a permanent upgrade to the perks. However, Vanguard requires you to upgrade the perk tiers in-game for each match by spending Essence points.

Once you have the free base tier of a perk, you can pay to upgrade the base stats of the perk by paying 2,500 Essence for tier 2, then 5,000 for tier 3, and 7,500 for tier 4. Unfortunately, this is a little more simplistic than what we saw in Black Ops Cold War’s upgrade tier. You won’t get any additional abilities to stack with the base stat. Instead, the upgrades just buff the base perk’s ability.

Fiendish Fortitude

  • Tier 1: 25% health boost
  • Tier 2: 50% health boost
  • Tier 3: 75% health boost
  • Tier 4: 100% health boost

Diabolical Damage

  • Tier 1: 25% critical damage
  • Tier 2: 50% critical damage
  • Tier 3: 75% critical damage
  • Tier 4: 100% critical damage

Venomous Vigor

  • Tier 1: 25% health regen speed boost
  • Tier 2: 50% health regen speed boost
  • Tier 3: 75% health regen speed boost
  • Tier 4: 100% health regen speed boost

Demonic Frenzy

  • Tier 1: 25% faster reload speed
  • Tier 2: 50% faster reload speed
  • Tier 3: 75% faster reload speed
  • Tier 4: 100% faster reload speed

Aethereal Haste

  • Tier 1: 25% faster movement speed
  • Tier 2: 50% faster movement speed
  • Tier 3: 75% faster movement speed
  • Tier 4: 100% faster movement speed

In another Zombies mode first, you won’t lose all your perks if you go down. Because they’re free in Vanguard, you’ll keep all your base perks after getting revived. However, you will lose your highest tier of the additional upgrade tiers each time you go down, and then you’ll need to repurchase them. For example, if you have purchased all tier 3 upgrades for your perks and go down, you’ll lose all the tier 3 upgrades. If you go down again before repurchasing, you’ll lose all tier 2 upgrades.
