Hyundai, Kia Recall 3 Million Cars In US Over Fire Risk

Hyundai and Kia are recalling 3 million U.S. vehicles due to fire risk. Models include Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, Forte, Rio, Sportage, and Sorento.

The problem is connected to the Idle Stop & Go (ISG) system in these vehicles. This system shuts off the engine when the car stops to save fuel. However, some of the ISG system’s electrical parts can get too hot and potentially start a fire.

If your car is part of the recall, here’s what you should do:

  • Contact your local dealership for a free one-hour repair appointment.
  • Until your car gets repaired, follow the advice from Hyundai and Kia by parking it outdoors and away from buildings.
  • If you ever notice a burning smell or see smoke coming from your vehicle, don’t drive it. Instead, call a tow truck to take it to a dealership for inspection.

Here are some signs that your car might have a problem with the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly:

  • You detect a burning or melting smell from the engine area.
  • Smoke is coming from the engine compartment.
  • The engine stalls or doesn’t start at all.
  • If you experience any of these signs, get your car to a Hyundai or Kia dealer right away.

To prevent car fires, remember these safety tips:

  • Keep up with regular car maintenance, including oil changes and tune-ups.
  • Check your car’s electrical system for damage or wear regularly.
  • Avoid parking your vehicle in direct sunlight or near flammable materials.
  • If you ever sense a burning smell or see smoke from your car, don’t drive it; have it towed to a dealership for inspection.
