Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm Preview

Manly had an extra week to mull over one of the most extraordinary late collapses in recent memory. The better side for 70 minutes against high-flying North Queensland courtesy of an aggressive defensive display, the Sea Eagles conceded three tries in five minutes to crash to a 28-26 loss.

The heartbreaker left Manly in 10th place with a 7-8 record.

The 11-3 Melbourne Storm saw off the post-Origin challenge of Sydney Roosters (26-18) and overcame undermanned Brisbane (32-20) in their last two outings to consolidate second place.

The Sea Eagles found Cameron Munster impossible to handle in a 28-8 loss at AAMI Park in Round 12 – their sixth consecutive loss to the Storm by 10-plus margins. But the talismanic five-eighth is in serious doubt with a shoulder injury and fellow Maroon Felise Kaufusi is out for family reasons.

Chris Lewis comes into the second-rower for Melbourne and Jayden Nikorima is on the bench. The Storm’s six-strong Pacific Test contingent have all been named, with Jahrome Hughes (NZ) and Justin Olam (PNG) absolutely outstanding on the weekend.

Sean Keppie replaces a concussed Josh Aloiai in Manly’s starting pack this weekend with Taniela Paseka returning on the bench.

The Storm are undefeated at Manly since 2015. The Sea Eagles’ record in recent seasons against top-class opposition is dismal, but if they can harness the positive aspects of their performance from the agonising loss for the Cowboys they could go close here against a Storm side missing a couple of key pieces.
