‘Mario Vs. Donkey Kong’, ‘Lake’, Plus Today’s Other Releases And Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for February 16th, 2024. As is usually the case for Fridays, we have a small selection of new releases to finish the week with. The big one is Mario vs. Donkey Kong, which I’m told is not a game about a civil suit. Well, color me embarrassed! After summarizing those, we head into a fairly hefty list of new sales for the day, along with the expiring discounts for the weekend. Let’s finish the week in style!

New Releases

Mario vs. Donkey Kong ($49.99)

Well, here’s our big February first-party release. It’s a remake of the Game Boy Advance game of the same name, a rather enjoyable puzzle-platformer of sorts that gets more puzzle than platformer the deeper in you go. Donkey Kong has stolen all the Mini Mario toys, and Mario has to get them back or else he’ll lose out on his royalties. You pushed the wrong button, Donkey Kong. Mario loves money like Joanie loves Chachi. I’ll be reviewing this one relatively soon, but I can already tell you that it’s a solid remake of a good game.

Lake ($19.99)

An interesting narrative adventure game about a woman who returns to her quiet hometown to spend a couple of weeks doing her dad’s mail carrier job. The year is 1986, and Meredith needs a break from her big-city job at a software company. As you guide her, you get to decide who she talks to and how much of a relationship she has with others, and ultimately will make the choice as to whether she ends up sticking around in her hometown or going back to the city. It has its share of rough edges, but there’s a certain heart to it that I can’t deny.

Caveman Ransom ($4.99)

We don’t really get many caveman platformers these days, so it’s nice to see another one. It’s all wrapped up in that “five-dollar Switch platformer” energy, and with fifty levels to play you’ll have a fair bit to do for that price.

Edge of Reality ($4.99)

A visual novel about a man who works in a pawn shop. His life is turned upside down one day when a mysterious young lady steps into his life. What will happen in the end? That depends on your choices, of course.

The World According to Girl ($9.99)

This is an odd one, mixing deck-building roguelite elements with a child-rearing simulator. You have seven years to raise a girl into a world savior, after which she is meant to board a ship to space and save the world. How that all ends depends on how you shape her over the course of those years. If you like those princess-raising games or what-have-you, you’ll likely enjoy what this is doing.

Bucket Crusher ($4.99)

This doesn’t look like fancy dining in the least, but I’ll always have some time for games that are about enjoying the process of simple destruction. In this one you’re knocking down walls with a circular saw, collecting the debris, and converting it into cash to upgrade your equipment. The walls are actually mosaic images for the most part, so you can break down Doge, a giant ice cream bar, and various other things. Who knows? It might be what you’re in the mood for.

Look, I know no one is really playing these things in the West, given they’re text-heavy affairs that are entirely in Japanese, but I can’t get enough of the bizarre titles. That alone will forever keep them out of the Bin Bunch.
