Minecraft: How To Make Circles & Spheres

It’s no secret that Minecraft is a game dominated by squares, nary a circle to be found, but it’s very common for players to want to build bases of this shape. Castle towers, outposts, villager trading halls, and various other build categories can make use of circles, but it can be incredibly annoying to make one that looks smooth. When building spheres, the task becomes even more aggravating.

Luckily, tools and templates have been made by the community to aid in circle construction. Creating spheres uses these same tools but is a significantly more involved process, requiring players to create multiple intersecting circles, with carefully decided radii.

How To Make A Circle In Minecraft

Creating a circle is easy enough with the help of a few online tools. It should be noted that no circle in the game will look perfect, but the larger the circle is, the better it will look. To begin, players should determine what diameter they would like their circle to be. Every possible diameter has its own template, which can be determined using the Minecraft circle generator tool. Simply input the diameter into either the height or width box, set the fill type, and voila. It will create a template, as well as tell players exactly how many blocks are required.

Alternatively, if players are creating a circle with a diameter of 31 or smaller, there is a helpful chart that players can use. Players who create lots of circular structures will likely want to hold onto this image.

How To Make A Sphere In Minecraft

Here’s where things get slightly more complicated. Spheres can be made in Minecraft using the same general concept as circles, but it involves making many combined circles. There is a fairly straightforward set of steps that players can follow to create spheres of all sizes.

To begin, players should determine the size of their sphere, then construct a regular horizontal circle of that size using the aforementioned tool. This will be the center slice of the sphere.

Next, players will create two more circles of this same size, along the other two axes, intersecting the edge of the first circle as seen below.

The result will be a large spherical frame with a cross at each of the six intersections. At each of these six crosses, create a circle of that cross’ width’s diameter. This will create the six “caps” for the sphere.

Next up, work one more layer inward. Use the next blocks just behind the cap to construct the outline of a new circle. Again, do this for all six caps. Since players are working their way inward along all three axes at once, this ensures rotational symmetry of the sphere.

Continue to do this until there are no more blocks in the original horizontal circle left to build off of. At this point, there should only be small openings in the eight “corners” of the sphere. These openings will be relatively small compared to the rest of the circle, so filling them in is very intuitive. Simply follow the existing curvature of the sphere to fill in the holes.

Upon filling in these corners, the sphere will be complete.
