Minecraft Will Not Have NFTs or Other Blockchain Technologies: Mojang

Minecraft developer Mojang has released a statement about its position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) in Minecraft. The statement is generally quite negative on the entire idea, and comes on the heels of a few Minecraft servers offering NFTs related to the game for those who participate.

Mojang doesn’t want to include NFTs in Minecraft because it goes against the Minecraft Usage Guidelines.

“To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications, nor may Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset,” says the statement by Mojang.

“The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is inconsistent with the long-term joy and success of our players.”

Ultimately, Mojang doesn’t want Minecraft to harbour a culture of separating its playerbase into “haves” and “have nots”. The studio also points out that the NFT market is also full of scams, such as fraudulently inflated prices.

While currently saying no to any possibilities of NFTs or other blockchain technologies coming to Minecraft, Mojang has left the door open for the future if the technology changes and new uses of the technology are found that would actually enhance the gameplay.
