MultiVersus’ progression is free, but skins and cosmetics might cost you a bit

The cost of a free-to-play game is secretly pretty high, depending on who you are. Fortunately, while MultiVersus‘ unlockable content system should be quite reasonable (new characters and perks), those who wish to bling out their characters with skins will have to pull out their wallet. That’s not a huge complaint — as long as the game doesn’t cross into the realm of pay to win, I’m completely fine. But getting all of the cosmetics in MultiVersus will cost you some money.

In MultiVersus‘ latest trailer, WB Games revealed how players will be able to unlock new characters for their roster. Similar to other free-to-play games, characters cycle through a free rotation, allowing you to try out some fighters for free at any given time. You can also try out each character in the training mode for free. You can earn Gold by completing challenges and playing online, which you can use to unlock characters and perks.

In fact, you won’t be able to unlock characters any other way. Playing the game is the only way you can unlock all this sweet content. There is an in-game currency known as Gleamium, but it can only be used to purchase skins and cosmetics in MultiVersus. The game is free of any loot boxes, but there will be a Battle Pass you can get in to unlock some new skins. Video Games Chronicle recently calculated the cost of purchasing all of these cosmetics: it’ll set you back by around $250 USD.

That’s not cheap by any means, but logically speaking, it’s pretty reasonable for a free-to-play game. You won’t be playing all the characters, so you’ll likely only need skins for your specific mains. From my time in the Closed Alpha, progression seemed pretty fast. It didn’t feel like an impossible feat to unlock all of the characters. As a free-to-play game, this was probably the best outcome, so I’m not too bothered by this news. At least this isn’t Diablo Immortal.
