Player First Games and Warner Bros. announce a tournament that will be at EVO 2022 for MultiVersus. This will be the first major tournament for the new Super Smash Brothers
When Is the Tournament?
EVO will take place in Las Vegas, Nev. in the Exhibit Halls in the South Convention Center at Mandalay Bay. The finals will take place in the Michelob ULTRA Arena. The event will run from Aug. 5 to Aug 7.
The tournament will focus on 2v2s where the top 32 teams will win cash from the prize pool. It will be formatted in a double elimination, with a winners and losers bracket. Matches will be best of threes until the top eight. The top eight will proceed to be best of five games.
Other rules include that stage hazards must be on and will now allow the use of duplicate characters. All perks will be legal to use on any character. However, all rules may change without warning from Warner Bros., Player First Games, and the organizers.
The Prize Pool
The prize pool will be $100 thousand. Despite not being one of the main events at EVO, the tournament will be the largest prize pool at the tournament. It will also be the largest prize pool in EVO history, with a larger prize pool than Ultra Street Fighter IV at EVO 2015.
The $100 thousand prize pool will be the largest in the event’s long history. The 1st place prize will be $10,000 and will distribute equally among the two participating members of the team. Unlike most other tournaments, entry will be free but must purchase a badge to participate in EVO tournaments.
With such a large prize pool, the chance to win prize money is quite high as 32 teams will win some of the prize money. 25th place will win $1,750 alone.
The Open Beta
The tournament will likely be full as many will want a chance at the large prize pool. However, several players feel it’s not enough time to practice as the game isn’t out by the time registration ends. Early Access for the beta begins on Jul. 19 and officially releases on Jul. 26.
This gives those who wish to participate 10 days before the tournament begins. They must find someone to play with, develop strategies, learn the characters, and much more. Though it’s likely the ones who excel at other platform fighters or had more time with it will do well at the tournament. The game is still very new and means any newcomer can come and win the tournament.
Multiverse and the open beta will be available for PC, PS4/PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. However, the version that will be playable at the tournament will be the Steam version of the game.

As the title will be very new at the tournament, it’s likely many participants will need time to develop their skills. The official rules might also change in the future, such as disabling stage hazards and banning perks that may be too powerful. Player First Games has made promises to listen to feedback and may change rules, patch characters, and perks in the future.
