New England Patriots Hire Jerod Mayo as Head Coach

After parting ways with Bill Belichick on Thursday, the Patriots have moved quickly to hire Jerod Mayo to be their next head coach. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news.

Mayo, 37, started coaching in 2019 as the inside linebackers coach for the Patriots. That is the only position he has held as a coach.

Before his time as a coach, Mayo had an eight-year career as a player, which was all spent with the Patriots. He made two Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl with the franchise. In his career, he totaled 802 tackles and 30 tackles for loss.

The Patriots moved quickly to hire Mayo, as they were the last to have a coaching vacancy, but the first to hire a new head coach this offseason.
