New Trails Game Coming Next Year As Series Has Shipped Over 6 Million Units

Today Nihon Falcom published its financial results for the fiscal year that ended on September 30, 2021.

Sales were 2,477 million yen (down 0.7% year-on-year) while operating income was 1,409 million yen (up 4.4% year-on-year),

The Product Division, which includes games released in japan recorded sales of 667 million yen (down 35.9% year-on-year). On the other hand, the Licensing Division, which includes games released overseas, took the lion share of sales with 1,810 million yen (up 24.4% year-on-year).

We also read that the acclaimed JRPG developer is preparing to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Ys series in 2022.

Speaking of the fiscal year that will end on September 30, 2022, the following initiatives are planned:

  • Developing in-house for Nintendo Switch starting in 2022 (previously, Switch ports were done external publishers like NIS America or Clouded Leopard Entertainment).
  • Continue to develop games that will bring new challenges while actively utilizing owned IPs like the Trails and Ys series.
  • Release of the newest game of the Trails series, which has now passed 6 million units shipped (it was at 5 million units exactly a year ago).

It’s worth mentioning that with the release of a new Trails game, Falcom means in Japan. The Legend of Heroes Trails From Zero, The Legend of Heroes Trails to Azure, The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails, and The Legend of Heroes: Trails Into Reverie for PS4, Switch, and PC will be released in the west all the way into 2023, and we don’t even know when The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki will come, so it’s unlikely that this new game will be released in North America and Europe before all the previous titles are localized.
