Overwatch 2 Reaper Rework is in Development

Overwatch 2 Lead Hero Designer Alec Dawson announced via an AMA on the Overwatch Reddit that a Reaper rework is in the works.

The Overwatch 2 hero design team posted an AMA on Dec. 11 asking users to chime in with questions regarding the state of the game, hero balance, reworks and everything in-between. A question posed by user darthnick426 asked about a possible Reaper rework after Blizzard previously mentioned the design team had a list of Heroes that need a rework or update.

Dawson, under the Reddit username Blizz_Alec confirmed Reaper was on the list and discussed how the team is approaching a potential rework.

“Reaper is also that list,” Dawson said. Had our frist brainstorm and have aligned on our overall goals for what we want to see with Reaper’s abilities. One of those goals is modernizing Reaper’s kit, Shadow Step and Wraith Form standing out there. We may also explore some new abilities for Reaper (on the right-click), but don’t want to take the space just because it’s available. If we add something there, we’ll want to give him slightly more decision making in-combat than he currently has.”

Reaper has been a popular Hero since Overwatch’s inception thanks to his ability to fight tanks upfront. His mobility and AoE team wiping ultimate feel satisfying to use when executed correctly. Still, it’s good to see a Reaper rework is in development so he stays up to date and viable as new Heroes continue to be released.

No further details regarding a potential release date were announced. It’ll likely be some time before any official details are announced regarding new abilities, updates or a full kit rework considering the early stages of discussions.

As of writing, the most recent Hero released was Mauga. The Hero was introudced with Overwatch 2 Season 8: Call of the Wild.
