The weather forecast for Game 1 of the NHL playoff series between the Nashville Predators and Colorado Avalanche proved accurate. The Preds were absolutely snowed under by the Avalanche. Colorado scored five first-period goals and won 7-2.
Is there any reason to suspect that the winds of change will blow into town in time for Game 2 of this best-of-seven set? Accuweather – and the oddsmakers – say not likely.
The Avalanche are massive -380 favorites to win Game 2. Colorado has won an NHL-high 33 home games this season. Nashville is 1-6 straight up over the club’s past seven road games.

The Avalanche feature two of the most productive point-producing forwards in Stanley Cup history. Among players with a minimum 40 NHL playoff games, Avs center Nathan MacKinnon (1.41) is third all-time in postseason points per game. Linemate Mikko Rantanen (1.25) is tied for fourth all-time.
Meanwhile, defenseman Cale Makar, the -264 chalk in the Norris Trophy odds, is fourth all-time in ppg (0.94) among NHL rearguards with at least 30 career playoff games under their belt.

Nashville (Filip Forsberg, Matt Duchene) and Edmonton were the only NHL teams to suit up two 40-goal scorers during regular-season play. But the Preds have been outscored 11-2 over their past six periods of play.

Nashville vs Colorado Injury Report
Nashville #1 goalie Juuse Saros (ankle) is going to miss at least the first two games of the series.
Defenseman Jeremy Lauzon (lower body) is listed as week-to-week.
Colorado, as expected, got back captain Gabriel Landeskog for Game 1. He’d been out since mid-March following knee surgery. It was the first time all season the Avs were 100% healthy in terms of their regulars but it didn’t last long.

During Game 1, forward Nico Sturm left the game in the second period with an apparent arm injury but later returned to action. Forward Andrew Cogliano also left the game with an upper-body injury.
Defenseman Ryan Murray (broken hand) is out.
Who’s in Goal for the Predators?
Still minus Saros, the same question posed prior to Game 1 remains relevant in Game 2. Minor-league call up Connor Ingram took over after Colorado chased Nashville starter David Rittich from the net with that barrage of five first-period goals.

Does Predators coach John Hynes opt to stay with the rookie Ingram for Game 2? His Game 1 appearance was just the fourth of his NHL career.
Nashville vs Colorado Projected Starting Goalies
Team | Goalie | Record | SV% | GAA |
---|---|---|---|---|
Predators | Connor Ingram | 0-0-0 | .938 | 2.67 |
Avalanche | Darcy Kuemper | 1-0-0 | .920 | 2.00 |
Playoff Darcy Kuemper was every bit as stingy as regular-season Kuemper. In his first year with the team, he’s proven to be spectacular.

Kuemper tied for fourth in the NHL in wins (37) and shutouts (5) and ranked fifth in save percentage (.921) during the regular season.
Predators vs Avalanche Game 2 Prediction
Expect more of the same. No, Colorado probably won’t score five times in the first period. But the Predators minus Saros are an absolute mess.

Colorado is dominating territorially. Without world-class netminding, Nashville has no hope of staying competitive in this series.
