Quake Sequel Rumored as New Zenimax Job Post Surfaces

Quake

In August 2021, gamers were thrilled to get a remastered version of the FPS classic Quake. Originally developed by id Software, the 1996 Doom successor sees players finding their way through medieval maze-like environments slaying anything in their path. As of this moment, Quake has four sequels and fans are getting restless imagining what a current-gen title would look like, especially after experiencing the classic title in its remastered glory. Now, some job postings popping up on the Zenimax website have fans wondering if this pipe dream may actually come true. (Now imagine if they bring back Nine Inch Nails to do the music.)

Apparently, Zenimax, the parent company of id Software, is hiring new recruits for the Doom and Quake studio. Although no exact details are given as to the scope of their work, certain posts mention that new hires will help in the development of an “iconic long-running action FPS,” with another vacancy mentioning “sci-fi and fantasy environments.” This sounds much more like Quake than Doom, as the latter has gone for a much more horror aesthetic in recent years. Even if this isn’t for an entirely new Quake title, a reboot is something that would make sense, given the following the series still has after so many years.

The 2021 Quake remaster has been hugely popular, bringing in shiny 4K visuals and bringing back one of John Romero’s old maps. While it might be a while before we find out what Zenimax is up to, there’s plenty of reason to believe that this title has life in it yet.

The Quake remaster is available now for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. In addition to using modern rendering techniques, this version also includes both mission packs, Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity. A port of Quake 64 was also included via the new “Add-On” menu.
