Riot Games Suspends Former G2 CEO Carlos Rodriguez
After weeks of continued investigations at the headquarters, Riot Games has finally announced its decision and suspended the ex-G2 Esports CEO Carlos Rodriguez. Carlos will be required to pass requirements if he wants to return to the Riot Games ecosystem in the future. He has been suspended for eight weeks, starting from 18 September 2022 to 13 November 2022.
Eight-Week Suspension
G2 Esports’ owner, Carlos “ocelote” Rodriguez shared a video on Twitter, partying with Andrew Tate, who was banned by the biggest social media platforms due to his misogynistic comments.
After being criticized, Rodriguez did not back up but even defended his position which made the situation even worse. Due to this behavior, multiple journalists reported that G2 Esports has lost its VALORANT 2023 Americas League slot, one of the top VALORANT tournaments, which is worth approximately $20 million.
Riot Games’ announcement for the occasion is as follows: Carlos Rodríguez engaged in activity detrimental to the best interest of the League and Riot Games in violation of the LEC Rules. Consequently, he is suspended from holding any managerial or operational position with a team or organization in a Riot-sanctioned competition, or participation therein until November 13, 2022. In addition, Carlos Rodríguez is required to complete: (i) sensitivity training, and (ii) executive training as detailed below. The training must be provided by an independent third party that is unaffiliated with G2 Esports, the League, or Carlos Rodríguez. The relevant rule states that team managers or members can’t give, make, issue, authorize or endorse any statement or action having, or designed to have, an effect prejudicial or detrimental to the best interest of the League, Riot Games, or its affiliates, or League of Legends, as determined in the sole and absolute discretion of the League.
Who is Carlos?
Carlos “ocelote” Rodriguez is one of the most known esports figures in the ecosystem. He is an ex-professional League of Legends mid laner. He founded G2 Esports years ago and played for the team for several years. After retiring from the professional scene, he then focused on increasing the brand value of G2 Esports and made it one of the biggest esports teams in the world. He was known for his “sharp” behavior and lastly got criticized by many people on the internet. Rodriguez quit G2 shortly after the occasion and left his duty in the organization.
As a matter of fact, G2 Esports will not be a part of the highest competition level of the VALORANT Champions Tour in 2023. G2 was reportedly set to acquire the XSET roster as XSET failed to get accepted to the partnership tournament. At first, he announced that he has stepped down to take a break, after a meeting with the G2 Esports board. A couple of days after the occasion, Rodriguez shared a video, mentioning that he had left G2 Esports. From now on, he won’t be a part of the organization as a shareholder or CEO. He also hasn’t announced his future plans, if he wants to stay in esports or not.
