Sony’s London Studio, Media Molecule Were Reportedly ‘Highest on the List’ for Closure

In case you missed the big news last week, PlayStation joined the rest of the industry in cutting hundreds of jobs across its business. What’s more, the platform holder is closing one of its longest-standing developers, London Studio — but it seems another UK team may have been at risk, too.

In the wake of all the unfortunate news, Kotaku senior reporter Ethan Gach shared a new detail provided to him by an anonymous source. Apparently, London Studio and Media Molecule were both “highest on the list” for potential closure. After hearing this, Gach reached out to people at both studios, but nobody was aware of the situation.

London Studio had been working on a live service multiplayer game, of which we only saw some colourful concept art. It would’ve been an online co-op title, based in London with a fantasy twist. Before that, the team focused on developing and supporting new tech and initiatives; its last game was Blood & Truth, a PSVR exclusive. Going back further, it’s perhaps most famous for The Getaway.

Media Molecule is perhaps better known, having brought us beloved games like LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway. Its latest game, Dreams, is an incredibly ambitious creation suite that was unable to secure a substantial player base. Consequently, ongoing development has been cut short so the team can work on its next game. The developer has already been downsized prior to PlayStation’s company-wide layoffs.
