Square Enix on Avengers – Disappointing, But A Lesson To Be Learned

Marvel’s Avengers, probably one of the biggest projects Square Enix had in the works in the previous few years, was quite the disappointment. Sales had not met expectations, and the team at the partner studio, Crystal Dynamics, had done multiple blunders, such as its disappointing Red Room event or finally caving and selling in-game EXP boosters. To call Avengers a failure would be an understatement.

However, it seems as though Square Enix themselves have caught on to that truth, and had some choice words for the game. Let’s break down some of the studio’s comments regarding the failure of the project.

Avengers – A Lesson To Be Learned

To put it bluntly, they admit that the game was a bit of a failure. Hell, the 2021 Square Enix annual report is proof enough of that. However, Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda had some choice words for the matter and had this to say:

I would also note that “Marvel’s Avengers” was an ambitious title for us in that we took on the GaaS (Games as a Service) model. We overcame a variety of unexpected difficulties in the final phase of the game’s development, including needing to transition to work-from-home due to the pandemic. We were able to surmount these challenges and release the game, but it has unfortunately not proven as successful as we would have liked.

Nonetheless, taking on the GaaS model highlighted issues that we are likely to face in future game development efforts such as the need to select game designs that mesh with the unique attributes and tastes of our studios and development teams. While the new
challenge that we tackled with Avengers produced a disappointing outcome, we are certain that the GaaS approach will grow in importance as gaming becomes more service oriented. How we go about creating new experiences by incorporating this trend into our game design is a key question that we will need to answer going forward.

So, despite what people think, it seems as though Square Enix has noticed the failure of Avengers and looks to learn from it. Jumping on the games as a service trend, despite what’s happened, seems like the smart move, and given what’s happened, hopefully, they learn from it.

Marvel’s Avengers is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC via Steam, and Google Stadia.
