Sydney Swans vs Adelaide Crows Preview

There’s still five weeks of footy left to play out, but the Swans could take one giant step towards locking up a finals spot this week.

A 17-point scalp over Fremantle was exactly what the doctor ordered last Saturday, a game the Swans had no business winning after kicking 16 behinds and trailing by a big margin at half time.

Sydney has a chance to improve on that performance even further this week, but coach John Longmire will be expressing the importance of not underestimating a plucky Crows outfit that nearly knocked off Collingwood in wet and slippery conditions.

The Crows were arguably the better team for three quarters at Adelaide Oval, matching Collingwood’s late pressure and intensity, only to fall short by five points.

Adelaide has a good recent record at the SCG having won two of its last three visits, but this does stack up as a huge challenge for a team that has struggled to score since the early parts of the season.

The Swans have had their own scoring woes, but defensively, they’ve been one of the better teams in the competition holding opponents to the fifth-fewest goals.

It’s worth noting Tex Walker kicked six goals on the Swans when these two sides met in Round 2 last year, but the Swans still prevailed by 33 points on the back of some brilliance from Buddy Franklin and Isaac Heeney.

Considered one of the more in-form teams over the last month, the Swans should be adding to their winning record, but given the rain expected in Sydney over the coming days, it could turn out to be closer than the bookies expect.
