The Best Cleveland Cavalier Point Guards of All-Time

Looking back, the Cleveland Cavaliers have had a number of great point guards leading their teams over the years. But who’s the best ever? Here’s a look at the best Cleveland Cavalier point guards of all time. 

Ron Harper

Although none of his five championship rings were won in Cleveland, Ron Harper did play his first four seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Across those four years, he averaged 19.4 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game. He shot 47.4% from the field but struggled from deep, hitting only 22.6% of the threes he took. He achieved his career-high single-game record in points (40), rebounds (16) and steals (10) in a Cavaliers uniform. Considering this, it’s surprising he was only able to put together one triple-double while in Cleveland. He was able to average a defensive rating of 104, nodding to his defensive prowess that would flourish in the coming years. With no all-star appearances and a lack of major postseason success, Harper deserves appreciation for his play but can’t be considered for all-time best.

Mo Williams

The only player on this list to not start his career with the Cavs, Mo Williams had two runs in Cleveland resulting in four seasons with the franchise. Over those stints he averaged 14.8 points, 4.6 assists and 2.9 rebounds a game on a 44.2 percent field goal percentage. He had two games in early 2009 in which he scored over 40 points, and established a good chemistry with the then-rising star Lebron James. This chemistry would come into play later when he returned for the 2016-16 season to finish his career in Cleveland, and help Lebron end the city’s championship drought.

Darius Garland

Darius Garland is the current point guard and one of the stars that make up Cleveland’s young core. He’s played four seasons and averaged 18.5 points, 6.7 assists, and 2.6 rebounds a game. He’s a scoring machine with 16 games scoring over 30 points, four games over 40 points and one 51-point game. These scoring outbursts and ability to find open teammates have led to one triple-double and landed him an all-star appearance. If this style of play continues he could find himself at the top of this list one day. For now, though, he remains a close contender and one of the most exciting young players in the league today.

Mark Price

Part of the classic teams that battled Michael Jordan’s Bulls in the 90’s, Mark Price is a Cavalier Legend. Over his nine seasons in Cleveland, he averaged 16.4 points, 7.2 assists, and about two and a half rebounds a game. A lights-out shooter with a 47.9 percent field goal percentage and a 40.9% three-point percentage, he represented the Cavs four times as an all-star and made the All-NBA First Team once. He also produced a respectable 104 defensive rating and could have led the Cavaliers to an NBA title (if it weren’t for Jordan and those meddling Bulls).

The Best: Kyrie Irving

Was there ever any doubt? Kyrie Irving is firmly the best Cavileer point guard. Averaging 21.6 points and 5 and a half assists with a 47.2 percent field goal percentage, he spent six seasons as a Cavalier and was the leading guard in Cleveland’s 2015-16 championship run. Four of his eight all-star appearances were during his Cleveland years, and he also won his Rookie of the Year award as a Cav. He is also arguably the best ball-handler of all time. Hitting the iconic three over Stephen Curry and etching himself into Cleveland history, Kyrie Irving currently stands as the best point guard to ever wear a Cleveland Cavaliers uniform.
