Treasures of the Aegean is a time-twisting Tomb Raider on PC and console

Out today on every platform you can think of (Xbox, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Switch and PC), Treasures of the Aegean is a game that may not have been on your radar until now, but having had the privilege of playing it and reviewing it, we’re eager to recommend it. 

At its heart, this is a 2D platformer that might give you flashbacks to games like, well, Flashback and Prince of Persia. But rather than being stiff and slow like those games often were, this embodies the spirit of Mirror’s Edge, as you parkour about without any concerns for physics, your own safety, and whether a ledge might crumble when you grab it. 

This is all mapped to a plot that would prick up the ears of Lara Croft. A volcano erupts in the Aegean Sea, rising above the surface and bringing with it Thera, a long-lost Minoan civilisation. Obviously, no one is alive anymore, but the halls and chambers are ready for you to explore, as you canvas it for the treasures of the title.

You play Marie Taylor, ably supported from a helicopter by James Andrew, and you’ve got a small amount of time to raid the floating tomb before the volcano erupts again. In Thera, there are loads of collectible trinkets, while you can also gather information that rounds out your understanding of what Minoan civilisation was like. They certainly liked their puzzles, as the caverns are often locked off by them. 

But what makes Treasures of the Aegean special is a time-travelling element, which we won’t spoil completely. You’re given a small amount of time to raid those tombs before you’re whisked back. But you can wind back time and replay again, going in a different direction than you did before, but retaining your progress. 

Plus, Treasures of the Aegean looks rather spiffing, evoking some of the art and mood from European comics like Tintin. It really does come together beautifully.
