True Detective: Night Country is focused on the best parts of season 1

True Detective is almost back, and it seems like this time around the show is all-in on the supernatural undercurrents of season 1. A new trailer for True Detective: Night Country was released on Monday that shows off the show’s central case, and hints at the spooky forces that could be at work behind all the blood and murder. The show returns to HBO on Jan. 14.

The new season of the show follows Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and her old partner Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) as they two investigate how and why eight men disappeared without a trace in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. As usual with True Detective, the two will have to contend with some darkness in their own past, as well as whatever darkness is at play in the freezing cold of Alaska’s wilderness.

Unlike previous seasons, which were written by series creator Nic Pizzolatto, this one is being handled by horror director Issa López, who has said that she wants to expand on some of the supernatural undercurrents that were important in the show’s first season, but haven’t shown up much since.

Along with Foster and Reis, the show will also star Fiona Shaw (Petunia Dursley in the Harry Potter movies), Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), and John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone).
